Primary Purpose:
The Counseling Coordinator provides district-wide leadership to plan implement and evaluate a Comprehensive School Counseling Program that aligns with Comal ISDs mission vision and strategic goals. This includes coordinating with other department leaders and campus administrators to meet student needs and ensure compliance with state federal and local requirements. The coordinator also manages and supervises campus counselors to enhance their skills and the services they provide.
Education / Certification:
- Masters degree in school counseling.
- Valid Texas School Counselor certification.
- External candidates must have satisfactory fingerprint and background check outcomes.
Experience / Other Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years public school experience (3 years in school counseling).
- Two years experience as a classroom teacher (preferred).
- Both elementary and secondary experience (preferred).
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs.
- Adept at applying evidence-based theoretical frameworks when counseling students.
- Demonstration of counseling leadership management and supervision skills.
- Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills.
- Exceptional public speaking skills.
- Ability to manage personnel and department budget.
- Skilled at interpreting and communicating policies procedures and laws.
- Proficient at collecting and disaggregating data to evaluate program outcomes.
- Computer skills consistent with District expectations.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide programmatic leadership for school counseling that includes all components of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and incorporates the vision and mission of Comal ISD.
- Ensure program effectiveness and vertical progression via data as well as collaboration with counselors student support specialists administrators district departments and community partners.
- Plan and provide effective research-based staff development to support the use of theory-based practices ethical standards in counseling consistent interpretation of laws and district policies and implementation of both the Comprehensive School Counseling Program and the Texas Evaluation Model for Professional School Counselors.
- Supervise counselors and counselor leaders via consultations observations and feedback.
- Advocate for a comprehensive counseling program on all campuses and for a district that acknowledges and respects a diverse population of students and staff.
- Oversee the development of guidance curriculum activities related to prevention and intervention and assist in planning the instructional materials budget for campus counselors.
- Plan and execute the onboarding of new counselors and intern/practicum students.
- Assist in leading critical incident responses.
- Participate in annual strategic planning and program evaluation to promote plan and implement on-going job-embedded campus-based staff development.
- Monitor district compliance with laws related to the counseling program.
- Plan and maintain the training calendar for counseling professional development activities initiated by district departments.
- Assist campus administrators in hiring and evaluating school counselors. Participate in the recruitment selection and training of school counselors and make recommendations relative to personnel placement assignment retention discipline and dismissal.
- Support the utilization of a suite of software systems related to counseling operations.
- Seek professional development opportunities for continued personal and professional growth.
- Coordinate the foreign exchange student program.
- Collaborate with the Director of Counseling and Student Support and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Policy Report and Law
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and board policy. Recommend changes to district policies and develop and update procedures and guidelines related to counseling programs and services.
- Adhere to legal ethical and professional standards for professional school counselors.
- Research federal state and local policies precedents and current practices prior to taking action.
