Transportation Engineer 1 (TE1) PNs
Transportation Engineer 1 hire will complete ODOTs Transportation Civil Engineering Program to include a 12 month training plan & scheduled rotation through the departments core engineering disciplines; Planning & Engineering Construction and Highway Maintenance.

General Description:
ODOTs Transportation Civil Engineering (TCE) Program offers Engineering college graduates a great opportunity to begin or continue their career in the Civil Engineering field. The TCE Program provides a thorough introduction to the departments core engineering disciplines with hands on training in all concentrations of Civil Engineering. ODOT engineers develop traffic models environmental mitigation documents and create construction plans for upcoming roadway bridge culvert safety drainage and other projects. ODOT engineers are in the field overseeing projects being constructed. Whether it is a simple roadway resurfacing or the construction of a new bridge ODOT engineers make sure contractors follow specifications so all projects are properly built. ODOT engineers develop simple and complex traffic management designs manage ODOTs motor vehicle fleet and oversee winter operations a function that is critical to keeping Ohios economy moving forward. TCEs will be provided with 12 months experience & training with a Professional Engineer in the departments core engineering disciplines: Planning Design and Construction. Training opportunities include: GEOPAK Bentley Open Roads Designer (ORD) Surveying/CADD Project Manager Training Bridges Safety plus hundreds of other training options. Upon successful completion of the 12-month TCE Program & passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam TCEs can advance to the next level of the Engineering series.
In Construction:
Inspects standard projects (e.g. bridge overlays culvert replacements) to ensure contractor
compliance with plans notes & guidelines (e.g. examines plans verifies calculations checks
quantities estimates costs) & approves use of contingencies (i.e. quantity & plan design changes).
Maintains project records; performs surveying functions; identifies necessary engineering changes
(e.g. performs summarized engineering analyses makes specific suggestions for remedies).
Performs materials testing assignments (e.g. tests durability of specific mixes for bituminous concrete evaluates newly-marketed construction materials).
In Engineering:
Utilize engineering standards references policies and guidance and direction from higher level engineers to develop detailed construction plans in the areas of roadway pavement drainage structures pedestrian facilities signing lighting structure maintenance rehabilitation and replacement and other civil engineering specialties.
Performs work in CADD and other software including Open Roads Designer (ORD) ProjectWise the Microsoft Office Suite CDSS HY-8 Ellis Kronos EIMS and others as assigned or required by specialty.
Coordinates construction plans and details under the direction of project management staff with planning construction and external stakeholders.
Performs field reviews and reviews of existing documentation and plans as directed to obtain existing conditions to inform the design of proposed conditions.
Reviews other sections work product for conformance with proposed construction plans.
In Planning:
Analyze traffic and safety conditions and develop proposed countermeasures for any identified issues or concerns. Review signs pavement markings and traffic signals for compliance with applicable manuals and standards and make recommendations to improve traffic conditions. Conduct safety and operational studies on priority locations and upon request from ODOT management local stakeholders and the public. Review new requests for access to state highways for safety and operational requirements. Assist local public agencies (LPAs) with requests for traffic studies and applications for safety or traffic-related funding for projects.
Analyze the condition of various assets (pavements bridges drainage guardrail barrier lighting signals signs etc.) and develop a program to maintain these assets in adequate condition by programming and developing projects. Develop scopes for these projects and hand them off to the design and construction teams for development and implementation. Ensure that environmental regulations are met and minimize impacts to existing utilities and existing properties.
Assist local public agencies (LPAs) with the development and implementation of federal- and state-funded transportation projects. Help the LPAs apply for funding for projects develop the scope and schedule of the projects review plans and environmental commitments during project development help the LPA to bid and award the project and monitor the project during construction. Provide oversight to ensure the LPA is completing all required training and certifications and is complying with state and federal regulations on their projects.

All bargaining unit and exempt new hires to ODOT must serve a one year probationary period.
This position is overtime eligible per FLSA Standards.
If this position is filled internally the wage rate will be determined in accordance with the contract.
