Kwe we are seeking members to join our team as we co-create the Deveau Institute for Indigenous Governance and Social Justice @ StFX University. The vision for the Deveau Institute for Indigenous Governance and Social Justice is to support community-responsive collaborative research to advance Indigenous rights and support the revitalization and sustainability of Mikmaw justice and governance practices. The research practitioners of the Institute are guided by the teachings of etuaptmumk netukulimk msit nokmaq and the principles embedded in the Peace and Friendship treaties. The Institute will serve as a generative think tank and a nexus for critical assessment of policies and practices to combat systemic discrimination and contribute to treaty mobilization and rights implementation cultural resurgence and Indigenous self-determination.

The Director of Research for Indigenous Governance & Social Justice is an outstanding emerging leader and a culturally connected community grounded member of the Mikmaq Nation with a demonstrated interest in high-quality innovative work that is rigorous ethical and beneficial to Mikmaw communities and reflective of a broad range of community governance priorities. The responsibilities of the Director of Research will be: to undertake research in collaboration with local regional national and international researchers and networks; to secure research support from external funding sources in support of the Institutes research program; to provide research leadership within the Deveau Institute of Indigenous Governance and Social Justice; and to contribute to the Institutes overall suite of research-related activities and community-engagement programs.

We welcome applications from emerging researchers acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field as well as established and accomplished researchers in the area of Indigenous governance policy and social justice. Candidates should have training in policy analysis and applied Indigenous research methodologies. Lived experience working within Mikmaq tribal councils will be considered as an asset.
