JOB SUMMARY

The Student Advocate- Title VI American Indian Program supports American Indian/Alaskan Native students and families to access community and District resources; provides information on services available to eligible students about education under Title VI provisions; conveys information regarding school and district activities and procedures; develops relationships and resources to help families and refers families to other agencies.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Speak read write and present professionally analyze and interpret English written and verbal communications
  3. Ability to operate standard office equipment (e.g. phone copier scanner fax machines etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

These are examples of skills and experience that the best qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

  1. Experience working with student groups community support agencies community participation and involvement or other job-related experience
  2. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experience using data-based software
  3. Spanish or other language proficiency including ability to read write speak and understand

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Establish positive individual relationships with American Indian/Alaskan Native students
  2. Regularly visits elementary and secondary schools to mentor and advocate for American Indian/Alaskan Native students based on needs interests and goals
  3. Regularly visits elementary and secondary schools to confer with teachers counselors and other school personnel regarding the academic needs of American Indian/Alaskan Native students
  4. Develop relationships and resources within the community to provide needed assistance to eligible families and students
  5. Collaborate with community leaders organizations and stakeholders to identify outreach opportunities and develop strategic partnerships that enhance the impact of our programs
  6. Promote family involvement and provides tools to families to improve childrens academic social-emotional and behavioral success
  7. Create and implement innovative outreach strategies to authentically connect with students and families (e.g. porch visits and other off-site efforts etc.)
  8. Prepare written materials (e.g. correspondence memos reports data etc.) to document activities providing written reference and convey information from administrators or counselors
  9. Co-create and give presentations and workshops to relevant stakeholders around Title VI rights and services available to them
  10. Maintain a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic records
  11. Assist students and families to access community and District resources (e.g. clothing food holiday assistance medical insurance etc.)
  12. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  13. Participate in meetings workshops and seminars as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions
  14. Work under limited supervision utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines
  15. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties
  16. Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions as required
  17. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  18. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: some lifting carrying pushing and pulling up to 30 pounds some stooping kneeling crouching and crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 45% sitting 50% walking and 5% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
