This is a grant-funded position.

Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Data Analytics Supervisor the Senior Data Analyst will support the Reporting & Informatics section of Harris County Public Healths Office of Epidemiology Surveillance and Emerging Diseases. With strong skills in data analytics programming spatial analysis and database management this position will assist the existing team in fulfilling all department-wide analytics requests.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the full life-cycle of data analytics including requirements gathering analysis design data identification data collection data transformation and delivery of results.
  • Creates and maintains custom data repositories including database design and construction.
  • Mentors junior team members in coding techniques and best practices and conducts code checks/validation.
  • Performs other assigned duties including special tasks related to responding to emergency events.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in Public Health Computer Science Data Science Information Management Statistics or related field.

Experience:

  • At least four (4) years of experience working on data projects including data query cleaning management and analysis.
  • At least four (4) years of experience using statistical scripting languages like R or Python
  • At least two (2) years of experience using data collection and management tools like SQL SSIS SSMS.
  • At least one (1) years of experience using data visualization tools like PowerBI Tableau ArcGIS

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Data Analysis: Proficient understanding of data analysis concepts methodologies and techniques.
  • Statistics: Strong grasp of statistical principles including hypothesis testing regression analysis and descriptive statistics.
  • Data Manipulation: Proficiency in data cleaning transformation and manipulation using tools like SQL Python/R.
  • Data Visualization: Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau Power BI) to effectively present insights and trends.
  • Database Management: Knowledge of working with databases including data extraction transformation and loading (ETL) processes.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to identify issues within datasets and develop solutions.
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills to present findings and insights to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to meticulously examine data and recognize patterns anomalies and outliers.
  • Collaboration: Skill in collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver actionable insights.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • This is a Full-Time Grant-Funded position.
  • Typical work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • May require periodic overnight travel and long hours/overtime during emergencies/disasters.

Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers and printers. Work may require infrequent travel.

Physical Demands:

  • This is a largely sedentary role; however some duties would require the ability to lift up to 20 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
