Under general direction the purpose a Traffic Accident Investigator (TAI) is to investigate all types of traffic crashes from minor to fatalities. The TAI will determine fault issue state citation(s) and testify in court. Traffic Accident Investigators investigate criminal and non-criminal offenses and incidents process minor crime scenes (i.e. recovered stolen vehicles burglary vehicles) and collect evidence. Traffic Accident Investigators free up road patrol officers from non-priority calls allowing the road patrol officers to attend to higher priority calls.

Investigates various crashes such as minor fatalities DUI (driving under the influence) and hit & runs. Prepares crash report drawings of crash vehicles and personal property involved according to the State of Florida guidelines through the collection and interpretation of physical evidence at the crash scene. Provides traffic direction. Assesses damage traffic patterns and hazards if present.
Determine fault and issue a state citation if applicable.
Investigates reports of theft and assists with gathering evidence and taking witness statements.
Responds to court subpoenas to testify. Presents testimony and depositions of investigations in court.
Prepares various offense/incidents reports (criminal and non-criminal) such as thefts (petit grand bicycle) burglary vehicles stolen auto parts criminal mischief credit card fraud property damage and traffic hazards runaways missing persons lost/stolen tags and decals recovered stolen vehicles animal complaints phone complaints animal bites and abandoned vehicles/property.
Conducts interviews with witnesses victims and suspects of traffic crashes and criminal and noncriminal acts.
Responds to non-priority calls such as disabled vehicles and traffic direction to free up the road patrol officers.
Processes crime scenes for latent fingerprints and other physical evidence by using powder tape (to lift the prints) cards (to place the latent on) and digital cameras to photograph the scene. Follows proper chain for evidence collection.
Investigate citizen complaints such as truck parking ordinances violations of city ordinances and other various parking complaints.
Attends various city functions such as a Slice of Springs Our Town and city commission meetings. At some functions will perform bicycle registrations and explain crime prevention.
Assists citizens with vehicle identification number (VIN) verifications for title applications.
Provides emergency medical assistance to injured persons at crash scene e.g. CPR advanced first aid techniques.
This position may be required to work nights weekends and holidays.

Typical Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.
Some related experience.
Must attend 104 hour Police Service Aide Foundations course if not already completed.
Certifications must be acquired upon hire in Traffic Control and Direction Parking Enforcement First Responder First Aid and CPR.
Must possess and maintain valid Florida Drivers license.

Supplemental Information

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office or meeting and training rooms e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire and building safety regulations and traffic signals when driving.
