Position Summary:

As a part of the Ingram Center for Student-Athlete Success the Assistant Director of Student Services reports directly to the Director of Student Services. This position is primarily responsible for monitoring and supporting the academic progress of football student-athletes and potentially an additional addition the Assistant Director of Student Services will be expected to provide student-athletes with academic counseling and support services refer student-athletes to campus resources and monitor study halls/tutorial services.

About the Work Unit:

Vanderbilt Universitys Athletics Department prepares student-athletes to become leaders and champions in life by placing the highest values on integrity character sportsmanship and victory. Vanderbilt is a charter member of the Southeastern Conference and is the conferences only private school. The university fields 17 varsity teams (6 mens teams and 11 womens teams a total of 375 student athletes) 15 of which compete in the Southeastern Conference.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

1. Responsible for monitoring the academic progress of assigned sports and providing academic counseling and support services as needed

a. Meet regularly with assigned caseload including weekly meetings with first-year student-athletes as well as those in danger of not meeting good academic standing

b. Report academic progress to coaches and sport administrators

c. Check classes for attendance

2. Assist in tracking student-athletes compliance with NCAA academic eligibility and progress towards Vanderbilt University degree requirements

3. Help student-athletes learn time management skills to assist in balancing the demands of academics and athletics

a. Serve as a sounding board for student-athletes to help them deal with issues surrounding the transition from home life to college

4. Meet with prospective student-athletes and their families as requested

5. Alert professors and/or deans to absences due to university-sanctioned travel to athletic events medical procedures or illnesses deaths in the family or other extenuating circumstances that may constitute a missed class

6. Meet with professors advisors and/or deans as requested

a. Serve as a resource to professors if problems arise regarding a student-athlete in which they would like our assistance

7. Refer student-athletes to appropriate campus resources as needed.

8. Collect and report academic data as needed (e.g. SEC for Academic Honor Roll Vice Chancellor/Athletics Director Provosts Office Board of Trust etc.)

9. Monitor evening study halls as assigned

10. Seek intentional professional development opportunities for continued growth

11. Serve as a role model for student-athletes in terms of upholding integrity cooperation self-reflection and stressing the importance and benefits of education

12. Work in a cooperative team atmosphere to support student-athletes needs

13. Comply with all NCAA and SEC rules and regulations

a. Work in conjunction with the departments compliance office to stay current on all rules and regulations to ensure we are operating with the highest level of integrity

14. Lead student-athlete programming or significant office responsibility

15. Collaborate on and participate in special projects

16. Mentor other staff members

17. Display a track record of professionalism within the student services field and show significant initiative in performance and responsibility

18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services or the Director of the Ingram Center

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility of full-time staff and reports administratively and functionally to the Director of Student Services. An opportunity to supervise undergraduate or graduate student part-time staff may present itself based on experience and need.

Education and Certifications:

A Masters Degree is preferred.

A Bachelors Degree is required.

Experience and Skills:

At least 2-3 years of experience within football academics at an NCAA Division I athletics program is preferred.

Organized detail oriented and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision is required.

High emotional intelligence and ability to communicate effectively is required.

Knowledge of NCAA Division I and SEC rules and regulations is required.
