TITLE: Transportation Trainer
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The School Bus Trainer is responsible for training evaluating and supporting school bus drivers and transportation staff to ensure safe efficient and compliant transportation of students. This position oversees the development and delivery of initial and ongoing training programs ensures adherence to federal state and local transportation regulations and promotes a strong culture of safety and customer service within the transportation department.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional coursework in transportation safety or education preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a school bus driver with an excellent safety record.
- Possess and maintain class B commercial drivers license with passenger school bus and air brake endorsements and clean driving record.
- Prior experience in training or supervisory roles preferred.
- Valid Class B (or higher) Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) Air brake (A) endorsements.
- Valid School Bus Instructor certification or ability to obtain.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct initial and refresher training for school bus drivers attendants and other transportation personnel including classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training.
- Instruct drivers on safe driving techniques defensive driving student management emergency procedures and district policies.
- Prepare and maintain training materials manuals and records as required by district and state regulations.
- Evaluate driver performance through on-road observations and ride-alongs; provide feedback and recommend additional training as needed.
- Coordinate and administer testing for commercial drivers license (CDL) permits road tests and endorsements (air brake passenger and school bus).
- Maintain all required documentation for driver certification licensing and training compliance.
- Support new driver onboarding and assist with recruitment efforts by conducting informational sessions and screening applicants.
- Collaborate with the Transportation Supervisor or Transportation Director to investigate accidents incidents and complaints; assist in developing corrective action plans.
- Conduct safety meetings and participate in district or state-mandated workshops and training updates.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state and federal transportation laws regulations and best practices.
- Perform interior upholstery repair.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
- In-depth knowledge of pupil transportation regulations and safety practices.
- Strong communication and instructional skills both verbal and written.
- Ability to evaluate driver performance objectively and provide constructive feedback.
- Skilled in maintaining accurate records and documentation.
- Ability to lead by example demonstrating professionalism patience and integrity.
- Proficient with basic computer applications (email spreadsheets training databases).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed in both office and field environments.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions during road training and evaluations.
- May be required to work flexible hours including early mornings or evenings.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while driving or training.
- Ability to lift push or pull up to 50 pounds. Ability to drag 120 pounds per DPS standards.
