Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Infection Preventionist I (IP I) demonstrates effective emotional intelligence listening and learning skills and is acquiring baseline knowledge about each department and team in which they interact. The IP I develops fundamental infection prevention and control skills including: isolation surveillance (e.g. hand hygiene healthcare-associated infection surveillance (e.g. MDRO CAUTI CLABSI VAE and SSI) reporting appropriate data and information to assigned clinical units or areas and process measure data collection analysis and reporting to local state and national public health agencies as required.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Must be able to perform the professional clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department
  • Demonstrates competence in the areas of critical thinking interpersonal relationships and technical skills
  • Interacts in a courteous professional manner with evidence of conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrates collaborative working relationships and works under the direction of the Infection Prevention and Control Nurse Manager
  • Performs daily review (surveillance) of positive patient cultures and assists unit nurses in identifying and placing patients in appropriate transmission based precautions.
  • Performs basic analysis and presents infection control data
  • Able to manage afterhours pager calls with minimal assistance
  • Notifying local state and federal authorities about reportable diseases as required
  • Conducts infection control risk assessments for a variety of issues including construction and renovation projects equipment inspection procedures etc.
  • Educates individuals and groups about the risk prevention transmission and control of infection disease-specific care appropriate precautions and appropriate assessments
  • Investigates manages and conducts surveillance of suspected and confirmed outbreaks of infection
  • Serves as first line contact for nursing and house staff questions regarding transmission-based precautions and exposures to transmissible agents.
  • Takes initiative to address issues at point of care or to provide feedback to the department leadership to assure competent safe care and quality outcomes
  • Contributes to development of surveys reports assessments data presentation and other forms of documentation
  • Is present on in-patient units and has developed productive working relationships with staff
  • Participates in interdisciplinary performance improvement strategic planning and program assessment activities
  • Participates in the revision of infection control policies based on national guidelines and current literature
  • Provides consultation on infection risk assessment prevention and control strategies
  • Takes an active role in department and hospital Infection Control Joint Commission preparedness activities
  • Participates in local regional and national infection control related educational offerings and meetings
  • Provides clear written and/or verbal summaries and reports of infection control activities upon request of Infection Prevention and Control Manager Medical Director or other members of Hospital Leadership.
  • Collects analyzes and interprets data to support the Infection Prevention and Control Surveillance Program
  • Must be able to perform the professional clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelors Degree in Healthcare Administration a Healthcare related field Epidemiology or a related field of study from an accredited college or university.
  • 2 or more years of relevant work experience in healthcare or public health.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration a Healthcare related field Epidemiology or a related field of study from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Licensure and Certification
  • Associate Infection Prevention and Control (a-IPC) - Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC)

Knowledge Requirements
  • Read analyze and interpret contracts technical procedures and/or government regulations.
  • Display proficiency in computer and software skills.
  • Write reports and other forms of correspondence.
  • Present verbal and/or written information and respond to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Apply mathematical concepts such as fractions percentages rates and proportions to practical situations.
