Job Summary

Summary

The Accountant supports the mission of The Museum of Flight by handling and reviewing essential accounting tasks. This includes proper coding and data entry in line with internal policies and best practices and ensuring accurate entries into the general ledger and accounting systems. This role provides guidance to other accounting team members and serves as a backup for other accounting staff positions including payroll.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Review post and audit general ledger entries sourced from Cash Receipts Accounts Payable and Payroll.
  2. Enter standard monthly journal entries accurately and reconcile general ledger balance sheet accounts as assigned.
  3. Complete the monthly reconciliation process for Museum Bank accounts in a timely manner and cadence.
  4. Assist in the creation and distribution of Accounting standard operating procedures training and reference materials for internal customers.
  5. Assist with support and training for department staff across the organization on Accounting functions such as Microix and credit card portal system.
  6. Process Washington State sales tax reporting.
  7. Process and maintain Fixed Asset management in MIP/Abila.
  8. Support the Accounting Manager in creating processes year-end closing tasks external audit support and in improving overall department efficiencies.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate degree (or equivalent) in accounting required. Bachelors degree in accounting preferred.
  • A minimum of two (2) years accounting experience required with a preference in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Previous accounting software knowledge or Abila (MIP) experience preferred.

Knowledge

  • Solid understanding of basic accounting principles non-profit preferred.
  • General understanding of payroll processes including FLSA rules and regulations earnings and tax and benefit deductions.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Advanced skills in Excel including importing/exporting data files; and intermediate skills in Word.
  • Strong interpersonal customer service skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Detailed and deadline oriented with a track record of accuracy managing competing priorities and quality control.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Problem-solving mindset approach.
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner.
  • Gathers and analyzes information skillfully.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population and work groups.
  • Ability to work individually with little to no supervision as well as a team member who may be part of multiple teams.

  • Schedule is set by the supervisor with flexibility for evening and variable hours based on Museum need.
  • No travel is expected for this position.
  • Onsite attendance is essential to perform some of the duties of this position.

Paid-Time Off

Our paid time-off plans include 2 weeks of accrued sick leave and 2 weeks of vacation (80 hours each) per year 10 paid holidays and 2 floating holidays.

Compensation

The hourly range for this position is $30.00to$41.00depending on experience.
