Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse in the Labor and Delivery unit is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to laboring mothers postpartum patients and newborns. This includes cross-training in Labor & Delivery postpartum care and newborn care as well as performing sterile vaginal exams triaging obstetrical patients and managing various pregnancy-related conditions.

Responsibilities:
- Provide care for laboring mothers postpartum patients and newborns.
- Perform sterile vaginal exams.
- Triage obstetrical patients.
- Manage patients with diabetes mellitus pre-eclampsia/eclampsia and premature rupture of membranes.
- Utilize external fetal monitoring and recognize/treat abnormal fetal heart rate patterns.
- Administer blood and blood products.
- Start and maintain peripheral IVs and use infusion pumps/drips/IV monitoring.
- Administer antihypertensives epidural anesthesia and opioids.
- Assess and manage pain.
- Assist with vaginal deliveries and Cesarean sections.
- Insert Foley catheters and provide fundus/lochia/perineum care.
- Provide discharge teaching to parents including newborn assessment and circumcision care.
- Implement isolation precautions and use PPE.
- Document patient care using Meditech/IntelliSpace Perinatal.
- Utilize Pyxis medication system.
- Communicate effectively using SBAR.
Required Skills & Certifications:
- BLS certification
- NRP certification
- Labor and Delivery skills
- LDRP skills
- Mother/Baby skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience
- Active NY Registered Nurse license in hand
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
- Not specified
Special Considerations:
- Every other weekend is required.
- The unit does not accept first-time travelers.
- The OB unit is LDRP where all RNs are cross-trained for L&D postpartum and newborn patients.
