Role Overview:

In Growth Engineering our mission is to increase the number of transacting customers and grow theirpurchase frequency and lifetime value. We are the architects of core platforms and services that propelCoupangs growth and marketing efficiency. Our portfolio includes platforms for Search AdvertisingAffiliate Display targeting CRM Audience and Push Marketing along with core services for user profileslanding tracking and attribution. The team has significant opportunities in machine learning for areas liketargeting personalization and product recommendations.

As an Engineering Director you will lead the architecture development and operationalization of a next-generation data platform specifically the Marketing Data Platform. This platform is designed to processvarious data online/real-time near-real-time and offline with a focus on low-latency processingefficient model training and reliable data serving. Your leadership will be crucial in transforming raw datainto a robust data mart to enable high-performance machine learning model training and real-time onlineinference serving. This role directly contributes to advancing Coupangs data-driven capabilities byaligning technical innovation with strategic business objectives.

This role is based in Mountain View or Seoul with a global team in US and Asia.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and mentor a team of talented engineers fostering a culture of technical excellence andcontinuous improvement.

Define and execute the short and long-term architectural roadmaps for the data platform andservices.

Direct the design development and automation of large-scale high-performance streaming dataprocessing systems to drive business growth.

Oversee the development of scalable data infrastructure and pipelines ensuring they follow best-in-class software engineering practices.

Collaborate with business and product teams to translate business requirements intoarchitecture designs and execution roadmaps.

Ensure the platform meets high standards of availability reliability and low-latency.

Drive continuous improvement in the efficiency and flexibility of the data platform and serviceswhile maintaining high customer trust performance and availability.

Lead the collaboration with data scientists machine learning engineers and other stakeholdersto understand data needs and deliver effective solutions.

Champion data quality and validation processes to ensure the accuracy and consistency ofingested data.

Communicate with users other technical teams and senior management to gatherrequirements describe software product features and articulate technical designs and productstrategy.

Basic Qualifications:

10 years in software engineering domain with a significant portion in a leadership capacity.

5 years of experience in data-related products with good understanding in data engineeringtechnologies.

Experience in designing implementing and maintaining distributed systems at scale.

Demonstrated experience translating business needs to technical architecture and executionplans.

Experience taking a leading role in building complex software systems that have been successfullydelivered to customers.

A proven track record of influencing software engineering best practices.

Bachelors degree in computer science or a related field.

Business-level English (written and spoken) is a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with internet-scale datasets and feature engineering including feature pipeline andfeature store development.

Experience with open-source frameworks and technologies such as Spring AWS APIs NoSQLand Big Data Technologies like Kafka Hive Cassandra Iceberg Apache Flink or Apache Spark.

Strong leadership experience in a fast-paced ambiguous and agile environment.

Ability to work backwards from the customer and deliver innovative simple solutions.

Ability to speak Chinese or Korean is a good plus

Pay & Benefits

Our compensation reflects the cost of living across several US geographic markets. At Coupang your base pay is one part of your total compensation.

The base pay for this position ranges from $159000/year in our lowest geographic market to $351000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge skills and experience.
