Job Summary
Position Overview
The Functional Safety Engineer will ensure that all manufacturing and automation equipment complies with companys safety standards and international functional safety requirements. This position will collaborate cross-functionally with engineering operations and vendors throughout the equipment design and commissioning lifecycle to identify risks develop safety standards and drive continuous improvement in machinery safety.
Key Responsibilities
Perform risk assessments in accordance with ISO 12100
Partner with engineering operations and equipment vendors on equipment design validation and commissioning.
Develop and improve equipment safety standards documentation and compliance records.
Conduct equipment safety buyoffs with cross-functional teams.
Identify and implement corrective actions for continuous safety improvement.
Create and deliver training on machinery and equipment safety practices.
Support EHS teams in audits investigations inspections and learning team activities.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
35 years of experience in a Functional Safety or Equipment Safety engineering role.
Familiarity with mechanical electrical automation and control system design.
Strong knowledge of ANSI UL NFPA and ISO standards.
Ability to interpret electrical pneumatic and hydraulic safety circuits and evaluate performance levels.
In-depth understanding of electrical circuit design per NEC UL 508A and NFPA 79.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP/CFSE) or Certified Machine Safety Expert (CMSE).
Experience in battery or EV manufacturing environments.
Working knowledge of hazardous area classifications occupancy classification and hazardous material inventories.
Required Skills:
