What will you do

Under the supervision of a Traffic Systems/Operations Engineer you will;

  • Collaborate with professional engineers to provide technical guidance to field staff perform acceptance testing on new technologies and contribute to the design of intelligent transportation systems
  • Act as a key technical support for our Traffic Management Centre troubleshooting and maintaining the complex systems that ensure safe and efficient traffic flow
  • Play an active role in project management by helping to plan oversee and execute traffic signal and ITS projects ensuring they are completed on time and within budget
  • Review and evaluate new technologies to be deployed and propose which solution best meets requirements
  • Develop and maintain critical asset management systems creating and improving databases to track our vast inventory of traffic management equipment
  • Review operational issues collect and analyze data and provide technical recommendations to professional engineers on everything from signal timing adjustments to the implementation of new procedures and equipment
  • Provide maintenance support for equipment and systems in the Traffic Management Centre and network. E.g. maintenance scheduling troubleshooting non-functional equipment upkeep database and connectivity to servers
  • Provide responses to the inquiries received from the public collaborators members of Council and the other City staff regarding traffic signal street lighting and traffic control device operations
  • Perform other related duties as required

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Computer or Electrical Engineering from a recognized university preferably with coursework in transportation planning traffic engineering and traffic operations
  • Must be registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with APEGA (in good standing) and working towards a Professional Engineer () designation. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment

Assets:

  • Experience or familiarity with transportation related software applications

Skills required for success:

  • Ability to design review and test electronic equipment or computer system applications along with working knowledge of engineering analysis and design
  • Experience in project and construction management and familiarity with City and Transportation Association of Canada guidelines standards codes legislation regulations policies and procedures (OH&S Environmental etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with technical and non-technical individuals and the ability to exercise sound engineering judgment to provide appropriate technical recommendations
  • Strong planning organizational and problem-solving skills including conflict resolution and a demonstrated ability to develop relationships and work collaboratively

Conditions of employment & work environment:

  • Up to: 3 permanent full-time position
  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $34.563 - $42.011 (Hourly); $72167.54 - $87718.97 (Annually)
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance

Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and office and will require site visits and outdoor reviews at the construction site
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
