The English Department Writing Program (EDWP) is accepting applications for the position of Director of the English Department Writing Program. This position will be filled at the level of Lecturer III or Lecturer IV. The appointment is for a four-year term renewable at the discretion of the department and the College of LSA. The Director will serve nine months out of each year (September through May) with the Associate Director of EDWP serving as Acting Director during the summer (June through August). The Director will have a 1/1 teaching load and the starting salary will be $98000.
ANNUAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
collaborate with the Associate Director and Assistant Director of EDWP to design pedagogical materials for English 993 that best meet the needs of both undergraduate students and Graduate Student Instructors
facilitate the winter sections of English 993 (for GSIs who will teach English 125 for the first time during the following fall term)
facilitate pedagogical trainings for new GSIs
offer pedagogical support for the full range of courses offered through the writing program; this support might take forms such as full-program conversations working groups for Lecturer Faculty professional development opportunities for Lecturer Faculty small workshops and one-on-one consultations
offer substantive support for instructors navigating the impact of AI in the writing classroom
participate in weekly meetings with EDWPs staff Associate Director and Assistant Director
provide mentoring and professional development opportunities for EDWPs Associate Director and Assistant Director
manage relevant undergraduate and graduate student affairs including instructional concerns cases of academic misconduct and grade grievances
serve as an Executive Officer of the English department and participate in weekly meetings to represent EDWP-specific needs concerns and suggestions
serve as an ex officio member of the English departments Executive Committee
meet with EDWP instructors during weekly office hours and meetings by appointment
chair the EDWP Lecturer Review Committees for both Interim and Major Reviews
chair the EDWP Lecturer Hiring Committee
communicate with the EDWP community about relevant policies practices and matters arising
respond to EDWP-related queries from students instructors university personnel other writing programs and members of the public
serve as a liaison with the Sweetland Center for Writing which might include occasionally serving on the SCW Lecturer Review Committee
assist EDWPs Associate Director and Assistant Director with hiring Lecturer Mentors and Graduate Student Mentors as needed
assist EDWPs Associate Director and Assistant Director with selecting winners for writing instructor prizes as needed
teach one course of their choosing in accordance with curricular need
We seek candidates who have demonstrated:
successful completion of two Major Reviews as a Lecturer at the University of Michigan e.g.
Lecturer II who has passed 2 major reviews
Lecturer III who has passed 2 major reviews as a Lecturer II
Lecturer IV
effective teaching of a broad range of writing courses offered through EDWP
effective mentoring of students and other teachers
expertise in navigating AI in writing classrooms and an interest in helping instructors to think carefully and critically about the impact of AI in the writing classroom
experience with curricular development
experience with offering professional development for Graduate Student Instructors Lecturer Faculty and Tenure-Track Faculty involved with teaching writing courses
