A Brief Overview
Provides patient care under the direction of a physician or licensed nurse including but not limited to IV/IO access basic airway management medication administration and clinical documentation. Greets patients at night assists with patient placement and assists with patient flow initiatives and room turnover. Effectively interacts with the patient significant others and other health team members while maintaining high standards of professional care. Assists the RN in providing high quality care to the following patient populations: Infants Adolescents Young adult Adult Geriatrics Cardiac/ Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) Vascular Hemodynamic Monitoring Endocrine Renal Pulmonary.
What you will do
- Administer drugs orally or by injection and perform intravenous procedures under a physicians direction.
- Attend training classes to maintain certification licensure keep abreast of new developments in the field or maintain existing knowledge.
- Comfort and reassure patients.
- Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures such as stomach suction airway management or heart monitoring.
- Respond to Medical Emergencies on campus and provide a report of incident according to corporate policy.
- Answer patients call lights.
- Answer phones and direct visitors.
- Clean rooms prepares room for next patient and change linens
- Delivers messages and documents and collects specimens such as urine stool or sputum.
- Explain medical instructions to patients and family members.
- Provide patient care by supplying and emptying bed pans applying dressings and supervising activities.
- Provide patients with assistance walking exercising moving in and out of bed.
- Transport patients to treatment units using a wheelchair or stretcher.
- Turn and reposition patients in bed alone or with assistance to prevent bedsores.
- Assist the team in providing a safe environment including but not limited to restraining violent patients if instructed.
- Adheres to safety practices for own personal protection i.e. infection control devices lifts gait belts eye shields gloves (ex. Patient care and blood pickup).
- Set up equipment such as oxygen cautery and overhead irrigation bottles.
- Demonstrates accurate keyboarding proficiency and computer navigation skills.
- Responsible use of medical and pharmaceutical supplies.
- Demonstrates the ability to utilize appropriate equipment when providing nursing care according to unit/organizational policies including ability to trouble shoot equipment.
Qualifications
- Graduation from a national EMT-I/99 program Required
- Critical care experience Preferred
- Critical Care Paramedic Licensure Preferred
- Maintains employment as a paramedic by a paid service.
- Maintains current and active status on all required training and education as outlined by corporate policy (i.e. ACLS PALS Hazmat MOAB etc)
- Paramedic Iowa Dept of Public Health (IDPH) (United States of America) Required
- EMT Intermediate Illinois Dept of Public Health (United States of America) Required
