Description

ROLE PURPOSE:

The Driver will be tasked with facilitating and coordinating smooth transportation/movement of all staff assets and commodities safely to the desired destination following SCI policies and procedures. This includes ensuring proper maintenance of the assigned vehicle and adhering to Save the Children policies and procedures and local traffic laws.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY :

  • Drive / Ride SCIs vehicles/hired vehicles as per requirements and ensure that all goods documents and personnel in the vehicle reach their destination safely;
  • Carry out routine maintenance and repair of SCIs vehicles and promptly report to the Line Manager all repairs that need to be effected and ensure that SCIs vehicles are in good running condition at all times;
  • Prior to the commencement of the journey check and ensure that the vehicle is in good running condition and that all the necessary tool kits first aid kits fire extinguishers and other safety equipment are in place;
  • Undertake the delivery of letters and posting of letters as and when requested by the relevant officers;
  • Accurately maintain the running charts vehicle log sheets fuel consumption mileage etc. and other vehicle documentation and ensure that all vehicle usage is appropriately authorized and documented.
  • Ensure that the vehicles assigned are washed and cleaned regularly and the air pressure battery water etc are checked regularly;
  • In the event of an accident ensure that the proper procedures and precautions are taken care of SCIs interests are protected and any injured personnel are taken care of. This includes obtaining the necessary documentation police reports for insurance and record purposes;
  • Monitoring and reporting of and taking actions including visiting the garage and inspecting progress onroutine maintenance and repair of SCI vehicles and ensuring safety and good running conditions of vehicles at all times.
  • Keeping abreast with the most updated information on government traffic rules and regulations
  • Safety and security of staff and ensure all SCI policies and principles are upheld
  • Providing required support promptly at scale and in line with the rules and principles during emergencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have completed G.C.E Ordinary Level. Completion of GCE A/L will be an advantage.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • A minimum of 5 years experience as a driver preferably in an I/NGO or international environment.
  • Demonstrated experience of safe driving records and adhering to road safety and road rules.
  • Holds a valid Drivers license with A & D class
  • Excellent driving skills and thorough knowledge ofdriving rules and regulations and the local roads and conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to carry out basic repairs and maintenance of the vehicles.
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of courtesy and professionalism to passengers and people working with SCI.
  • Ability to travel to SCI project locations.
  • Basic knowledge in speaking and understanding English and a working knowledge of Tamil and/or Sinhala
  • Writing skills in Tamil and/or Sinhala and/or English.
  • Elementary use of computers (e.g. email internet Excel and word processing).
  • A good understanding of the mandate of Save the Children commitment to and understanding of child rights the aims and principles of Save the Children and its humanitarian standards such as Child Safeguarding and the Code of Conduct.
