DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
The Department of Biological Sciences offers 4-year BSc degrees in Marine Biology Biology Applied Coastal Ecology and Biology-Psychology as well as research-based MSc and PhD degrees in various areas of Biological Sciences. It has 20 faculty members with research expertise in a variety of fields of biology (marine biology evolution ecology physiology aquaculture fisheries environmental biology and biodiversity) as well as geology chemistry and physics.

Standard Work Hours: Shift Work Variable Hours 18 hours per week

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work later afternoon (after 5:30 pm)

Salary Range: $25.07 - $31.11 per hour

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Chair of Biological Sciences the Biological Sciences Technician supports undergraduate labs taught in the department with emphasis on Biology and Chemistry. The team of Biological Sciences Technicians prepares and dismantles lab materials maintains and inventories all lab equipment and chemicals maintains living specimens and provides technical advice to faculty staff undergraduate students and graduate students.

  • Prepare teaching labs.
  • Review lab procedures with the lab instructor and make any necessary modifications.
  • Check and maintain inventory of chemicals specimens and equipment required for each lab.
  • Arrange required safety documents and transportation for off-campus excursions.
  • Prepare chemical solutions and media. Collect or prepare specimens as required.
  • Provide necessary hardware and equipment. Clean used hardware such as equipment and glassware.
  • Make chemical waste generated in undergraduate labs safe for disposal.
  • Inventory and organize materials for undergraduate teaching labs.
  • Track expenditures related to undergraduate course labs.
  • Operate maintain and calibrate equipment.
  • Maintain living bacterial cultures and plants. Maintain and coordinate the use of holding spaces.
  • Maintain living invertebrates and vertebrates to Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) standards.
  • Maintain and coordinate the use of the animal holding spaces for teaching purposes.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to faculty staff undergraduate students and graduate students.
  • Oversee purchase and inventories of ethyl alcohol used for research and teaching purposes.
  • Attend departmental meetings to provide updates and input about undergraduate teaching labs.
  • Apply for funding and purchase new equipment for teaching develop new undergraduate lab activities and provide demonstrations/experiences for visiting student groups.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology Chemistry or Environmental Science.
  • 3 years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Previous experience and/or background in biology and chemistry.

Additional Strengths

  • Ability to adapt to unscheduled requests for assistance would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with WHMIS/GHS would be considered an asset.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Excellent communication organizational and teamwork skills.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to acquire and maintain First Aid training.
