JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Plant Engineer - Electrical.


Reporting to the Senior Manager Engineering this position is responsible for providing engineering support for small hydroelectric station redevelopment projects. The role involves providing technical advice and guidance on a variety of matters within the designated area of responsibility including hydro station maintenance operations performance design optimization plant configuration and commissioning.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide technical support and leadership to maintenance crews and management.
  • Manage electrical engineering assessments studies inspections investigations designs and evaluations for hydro turbine generators and auxiliary systems associated with hydroelectric generation.
  • Prepare drawings technical specifications and construction estimates and manage the end-to-end request for proposals (RFP) process.
  • Provide technical support regarding hydroelectric station maintenance operations performance design and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with customers stakeholders consultants contractors and government agencies as required.
  • Respond to emergencies conduct field investigations prepare reports and recommend actions pre-start health and safety reviews investigation of safety or technical incidents
  • Develop plans standards and technical procedures for inspection maintenance and asset life management programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4-year University Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) certification in good standing in the Province of Ontario is an asset.
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario.
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant experience as an Electrical/P&C Engineer; demonstrate technical knowledge of hydro-electric generation.
  • Valid Class G Ontario driving license (or equivalent) in good standing. Requirement to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Distribution class equipment up to 44kV (e.g. transformers breakers switches)
  • Low-voltage AC and DC equipment up to 600V (e.g. switchgear disconnects grounding arc flash analysis)
  • Excitation and governor systems
  • Electrical protections
  • PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems
  • SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and real-time control networks (large-scale and wide geographic coverage is an asset)
  • Hydroelectric generators (up to 6.6kV) and auxiliary systems
  • Experience conducting assessments testing studies inspections investigations design evaluations construction monitoring and maintenance of electrical works associated with generating stations.
  • Experience with design optimization and plant configuration.
  • Experience participating in and leading root cause analysis for equipment issues.
  • Experience with the Distribution System including connecting distributed energy resources to the grid.
  • Strong verbal and written communication collaboration and interpersonal skills for the purposes of gathering and relaying information resolving issues of concern.
  • Good organizational and leadership skills and to be a self-starter who can work both independently and in a team environment that is dedicated to engineering excellence and best practices.
  • Demonstrate high integrity upholding company values including H&S and protection of the environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Act and Regulations especially for Industrial Establishments (Ont Reg 851) and Construction (Ont Reg 213) as well as various codes and standards associated with electrical engineering and their application
  • A results and detail-oriented individual.

The base salary range considers many factors including but not limited to experience education and training including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
