Position Summary
The Principal Electric System Operator plays a critical leadership role in the real-time operation and reliability of WingatePowers electric system. This position is responsible for overseeing grid operations ensuring compliance with NERC FERC and regional reliability standards and managing complex system conditions. The Principal Operator will act as a technical authority and mentor for system operators and support the strategic development of operating procedures and grid modernization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor control and operate the electric transmission and distribution systems in real-time to ensure reliability and efficiency.
Analyze and respond to system disturbances contingencies and emergencies in accordance with established protocols and reliability standards.
Serve as the shift lead providing direction and guidance to other system operators and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
Develop and maintain operating procedures switching orders and reliability assessments.
Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory standards (NERC FERC ISO/RTO).
Coordinate planned outages and real-time switching with field personnel utilities and ISO/RTO operations.
Participate in system planning studies operational simulations and restoration drills.
Provide training coaching and performance feedback to junior operators.
Collaborate with engineering planning and regulatory teams on operational strategies and improvement initiatives.
Represent WingatePower in operational meetings audits and coordination calls with regional partners and reliability entities.
Qualifications
Required:
Minimum 8 years of experience in electric system operations or related field.
NERC System Operator Certification (RC BA or TOP credential).
Deep knowledge of power system operations SCADA/EMS systems and energy market structures.
Strong leadership decision-making and communication skills.
Experience in managing emergency response and restoration efforts.
Preferred:
Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Energy Systems or related technical field.
Prior experience with ISO/RTO operations (e.g. PJM ERCOT CAISO).
Familiarity with renewable integration DERs and grid modernization technologies.
Working Conditions
24/7 control room environment with rotating shifts including nights weekends and holidays as needed.
On-call availability for emergency response and support.
Occasional travel for training audits and stakeholder meetings.
