    SUPERVISING OMNIBUS OPERATOR
    Office of Pupil Transportation

    (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)

    The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Supervising Omnibus Operator within the Office of Transportation.

    This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

    DEFINITION: Under direction supervises the activities of Omnibus Operators; may also drive clean service and make minor repairs to vehicles used in transporting persons on assigned established routes or to special activities events or destinations; does related work as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
    1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
    2. Three (3) years of experience in operating a motor vehicle used in the transportation of six (6) or more persons.
    3. Appointees must possess a drivers license valid in New Jersey. Appointees may also be required to possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

    Note: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate rests with the Appointing Authority.

    BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods.
    2. Gives suitable assignments to subordinates.
    3. Prepares clear sound accurate and informative reports.
    4. Checks vehicles to see that prescribed schedules are maintained.
    5. Sees that vehicles stop only at designated locations.
    6. Notes whether vehicles load and discharge passengers properly.
    7. Assigns routes and passenger pickup points to operators.
    8. Dispatches vehicles for emergency runs.
    9. May drive a motor vehicle with a passenger capacity of at least six (6) persons for transporting persons on trips and established assigned routes.
    10. Checks cleans and performs minor servicing of vehicles.
    11. Checks vehicles for operating safety proper safety devices gas battery oil and water before departure.
    12. Establishes and maintains needed records and files.
    13. May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency office or related units.
    14. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.

    KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
    1. Knowledge of the state and local laws rules regulations policies and procedures dealing with the public transportation operations and of motor vehicle regulations.
    2. Knowledge of the proper methods of making inspections.
    3. Knowledge of the proper procedures used in operating vehicles and of the types of violations commonly found in vehicle operations.
    4. Knowledge of the geography of the jurisdiction and of the safety precautions followed in dealing with passengers.
    5. Ability to analyze problems involving the operation of vehicles.
    6. Ability to organize and give suitable work assignments to subordinates.
    7. Ability to drive vehicles in a skilled and safe manner.
    8. Ability to check clean service and make minor and emergency repairs to vehicles.
    9. Ability to maintain essential records.
    10. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency office or related units.
    11. Ability to read write speak understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

    SALARY EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION
    1. Salary: $62560 - $72318
    2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months
    3. Union Affiliation: Local 32
