We are looking for a dedicated and charismatic Interim Director of Communications & Engagement to lead our Communications Team in National Office where hybrid working is part of our commitment to flexibility and work-life balance.
About the role:
This role offers a rare chance to shape national conversations on brain health and neuro-rehabilitation lead high-impact public affairs campaigns and foster a connected engaged workplace culture all while steering ABI Irelands communications and engagement strategy at executive level. Acting as a strategic advisor to the CEO and senior leadership you will direct ABI Irelands communications public affairs and engagement work to deliver meaningful change. As one of seven directors reporting to the CEO you will also work closely with colleagues across Policy Research Fundraising Services Finance and People & Culture functions.
The role will be based in our National Office in Dun Laoghaire Co. Dublin with a hybrid option available for successful candidate.
This is a Specified Purpose 35 hours contract (with flexibility)(This is a maternity cover role)
The salary will be based on the HSE 2022 Grade VIII payscale.
What youll be doing:
As Interim Director of Communications & Engagement youll lead the development and delivery of Acquired Brain Injury Irelands Communications & Public Awareness Plan to align with ABIIs Strategy. Youll Serve as strategic advisor to the CEO and Executive Team and drive national awareness of ABI Irelands key policy issues.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Ensure all communications reflect ABI Irelands values and commitment to accessibility inclusion and equity.
- Establish and monitor KPIs to measure reach engagement and campaign impact reporting to the Board and CEO.
- Champion the voice and lived experience of brain injury survivors and families in all communications.
- Build strong influential relationships with media sector peers and partner organisations to amplify ABI Irelands voice.
- Represent ABI Ireland at national forums and coalitions including the NDSA Campaigns Group.
- Design and oversee internal communications strategies to promote collaboration transparency and values alignment and collaborate with other departments.
- Guide the Digital Marketing & Communications Executive on digital and design activity ensuring content is data-led and results-focused.
- Proactively identify and mitigate reputational risks in line with policy and protocol.
- Manage departmental budget and maintain the communications risk register.
- Take responsibility to ensure that relevant health & safety guidelines of the Organisation are met and that all staff are aware of the health & safety requirements of the services.
- Take personal responsibility for participating in mandatory training to ensure safe practices.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and charismatic communicator capable of driving policy and campaigns and thrives in public engagement. Youll bring strong influential relationships with media sector peers and partner organisations and be highly committed to championing the voices of those affected by brain injury.
Must haves:
- Degree-level qualification; communications-related discipline desirable.
- Minimum 5 years senior management experience in communications public affairs or marketing.
- Strategic thinker able to translate vision into actionable plans.
- Strong understanding of the Irish not-for-profit and political landscape.
- Proven record in leading successful media advocacy and marketing campaigns.
- Experience representing an organisation publicly and engaging senior stakeholders.
- Exceptional leadership interpersonal and networking skills.
- Outstanding writing editing and presentation abilities with strong brand/design awareness.
- Skilled at managing multiple priorities calmly and effectively.
- Highly organised detail-oriented adaptable to change.
Great to have:
- Experience in disability illness health promotion or related fields.
