Job Description - Central Office Technician
Install and maintain inside wire for residential/business broadband (DSL/Video) service Central Office and B-box junctions as required for broadband continuity digital subscriber carriers and associated broadband equipment such as DSLAMS Residential Gateways and DSL business class routers along with the array of wireless home networking equipment. Other equipment will include FTTH (Fiber to the House). Requires the ability to use and understand automated Dispatch equipment (i.e. hand-held terminals) read and understand broadband service orders and trouble tickets and the use of appropriate broadband test equipment. Must be able to adapt to changes in the business to include; advances in technology new skills and procedures as well as participation in the company lead generation program through the promotion and sale of additional Frontier products and services during each customer contact.
General Duties
Communication
- Communicate effectively and accurately on customer issues to eliminate repeat trouble calls. Mentor co-workers to expand knowledge be self-motivated and display the ability to follow through on assignments in a timely manner
Outside Plant Knowledge
- Effectively use preventive maintenance program by rebuilding aerial/buried/underground cables. Utilize General Order 95/128/133 to ensure proper facility installation.
- Read and interpret Outside Plant drawings
PC Applications
- Navigate web set up Business/Residential computer(s) and demonstrate applications to customer. Effectively use Frontiers internal programs and dispatch program to complete assignments.
- Products
- Support installation and repair of company products and services.
- Responsible for promoting and selling the companys products and services and participating in the companys sales referral programs during working hours.
- Testing
- Understand and demonstrate basic telephone/broadband technology. Utilize test equipment to install products and isolate trouble effectively.
- Basic Employment Requirements
- Education:
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Must complete company provided broadband training which includes full installs for DSL
Experience:
- Five (5) years experience in telecommunications installation and maintenance
- Must be able to complete full installs of broadband services (DSL)
- Basic telephony knowledge
- Must understand different PC operating support systems
- Must have knowledge of the following Radio Frequency attributes:
- Fundamentals
- Behaviors
- Spread spectrum technologies
- Network trouble diagnosis
- Telecommunications wiring color-code competency
- Basic keyboard and software skills
- Previous experience in application of California General Orders 95 and 128
Preferred Experience/Knowledge:
- Basic splicing or telephone construction experience
Certification/license requirements:
- Valid drivers license Good Driving Record (Some Areas may require Class A drivers license)
- Ability to pass/obtain Pole Climbing Certification
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to sit bend stoop stand and walk (occasionally over uneven terrain) for extended periods
- Regularly lift move or push 35 pounds
- Must be able to periodically move items up to 75 pounds
- Ability to climb wooden poles and various types of ladders
Environmental Factors
- (Ability to work in extreme heat/cold at heights over 15 feet 3rd shift):
- Ability to work in temperature extremes ranging from 30 to 110 Fahrenheit
- Ability to work in confined spaces (i.e.: attics crawl spaces manholes trenches)
- Ability to work at heights up to 75 feet
