About the Position:

Library volunteers play a vital role in supporting lifelong learning literacy and student success in the San Bernardino community. Under the guidance of Library staff volunteers assist with programs like Adult Literacy Tutoring and Homework Help directly engaging with learners of all ages to build skills and confidence.

Volunteers may help adults improve their reading writing and digital literacy or support K8 students with math and English homework during after-school hours. Each day brings meaningful interactions from helping a child solve a tricky homework problem to guiding an adult learner through reading a job application.

These roles are ideal for individuals who enjoy working with the public believe in the power of education and want to give back through consistent hands-on service. Library staff provide all training and materials making this a great opportunity for both first-time and experienced volunteers.

What Youll Be Doing Here

Adult Literacy Tutor
The Norman F. Feldheym Central Library is looking for dedicated adult volunteers to support learners in improving their reading writing speaking and digital literacy skills.

As an Adult Literacy Tutor youll work one-on-one or in small groups with adults from diverse backgrounds some learning English as a second language others looking to boost their confidence with everyday literacy. Youll help them read more fluently practice writing skills or navigate basic computer tasks.

No prior experience is needed just patience empathy and a commitment to helping others grow. Library staff will provide all training and materials.

Volunteer Hours:
  • Mondays & Tuesdays: 12:00 PM 5:30 PM
  • Wednesdays & Thursdays: 10:00 AM 5:30 PM
    Minimum commitment: 510 hours/month for 6 months

Homework Helper Tutor:

Do you enjoy working with kids and making a difference in their school success The Library is seeking teen and adult volunteers to help students in grades K8 with their math and English homework during after-school hours.

As a Homework Helper youll greet students as they arrive offer friendly guidance on their assignments and help build their confidence with learning. Youll also assist with simple tasks around the homework area and answer general questions from kids and parents.

Training is provided all you need is a positive attitude patience and a willingness to help.

Volunteer Hours:
  • Mondays: 1:30 PM 5:30 PM
  • Tuesdays through Thursdays: 3:00 PM 5:30 PM
    Minimum commitment: 510 hours/month for 3 months

What You Need to Qualify

Minimum qualifications may vary by department. Candidates who meet the specified criteria will be referred to the appropriate department(s) seeking volunteers.

Certain departments may require candidates to hold a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators license.

As a condition of your volunteer assignment you will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check before your start date.
