Job Summary

Job Title: Everglades Restoration Campaign Intern (Unpaid)
Department: Florida Chapter
Location: Hybrid in Miami-Dade County
Reports to: State Campaign Director or designee
Duration: 11-20 hours per week for 4 months

Sierra Club has close to 800 staff across the country and a network of 64 local chapters that are led and fueled by thousands of volunteers. The Sierra Club Florida Chapter is made up of volunteer leaders and civic activists representing over 32000 members. Our mission is to enjoy explore and protect the natural and threatened places in Florida to teach others to understand and respect the fragile environment in which we live and to support equal environmental justice for all. Across the state there are 17 groups that tackle local environmental issues head-on. Get involved locally to protect and serve our environment!

Scope: The Everglades Restoration Campaign is committed to building a movement to restore the Everglades; promoting pro-environmental policy and legislation and responsible growth; improving and protecting local water and air quality; controlling point pollution; promoting clean energy; and advancing environmental justice. The intern will work closely with the Everglades Restoration Organizing Representative and learn about grassroots mobilization stakeholder outreach and environmental advocacy.

A requirement of this internship is that the intern must receive course credit university stipend or compensation from another institution.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

    • Attending the Miami Groups Meetings and offering input and new perspectives.
    • Attending and/or speaking at public hearings and Board of County Commission meetings on pressing issues.
    • Writing newsletter articles.
    • Assisting in boosting the campaigns social media presence including creating content and graphics.
    • Organizing and staffing special events including preparing handouts displays and other materials at tabling events.
    • Creating distributable materials like flyers and rack cards.
    • Attending relevant campaign events and/or calls.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

    • Communication. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Graphic design skills.
    • Interest in environmental activism. Experience or a strong interest in writing environmental justice and grassroots environmental action.
    • Technology. Proficiency in Google Suite or Microsoft Word and video conferencing.
    • Good time-management skills.
    • Committed to self-evolution. You are committed to continuously deepening and evolving your own understanding of systems of oppression through study openness and humility. And you easily recognize your own relationship to privilege and power examining and shifting your behaviors as appropriate.
    • Uplifting and additive. You see mistakes as opportunities for growth; problems as catalysts for solutions and inspire others along the journey. You carry a constructive approach can-do attitude a sense of humor and authentic kindness wherever you go.

    • This is a hybrid work position including some virtual (work-from-home/school) and some in-person office work meetings and campaign activities. Some evening and/or weekend hours should be expected.

Compensation
This is an unpaid category 99 non-exempt non-represented temporary position.
