About the History Department:
The history department at The College of New Jersey is an active community of teacher-scholars who share a passion for undergraduate education. More than half of our majors are preparing for careers in teaching and other recent graduates have been admitted to top law schools and graduate schools including Harvard Columbia UPenn Rutgers Brandeis Vanderbilt and Villanova. The department has strengths in World History with specialists in Africa Europe South Asia Russia and Central Asia the Ancient Mediterranean and the United States. The department members are active scholars whose monographs and articles have been published by Cambridge Cornell Oxford Ohio University Press and leading journals in our respective fields. Position Overview:
The College of New Jersey seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in East Asian or Middle Eastern history. The position is based in the History Department which will oversee research and service responsibilities. Two-thirds of the teaching duties will be in the History Department and one-third will be in the Department of Philosophy Religion and Classical Studies.

We welcome applicants whose research focuses on any period or topic related to East Asian or Middle Eastern history. The successful candidate will contribute to all levels of the curriculum offering courses for majors as well as for students fulfilling core requirements. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to teach a course or courses in the pre-modern era before 1500 CE. An ability to teach historical methods is highly desirable.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong scholarly program and a commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentorship. We encourage applicants whose work supports the Colleges mission in teaching research and service.
Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. by August 25 2026. A Ph.D. in history is preferred but applicants with a Ph.D. in philosophy religion or area studies will be considered.
