The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track faculty member in the area of Orchestra Conducting beginning August 2026 with rank to be determined at hire. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses in music research and service to the university community and profession. Research and teaching expertise should complement existing faculty expertise.

Job Details:

The successful candidate will be able to direct the university orchestras and teach conducting as part of the music program. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate students results in publications and contributes to advancing the department university the profession and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community.

Responsibilities:

Full-Time teaching responsibilities include directing the university orchestras and teaching addition faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental college and university levels as well as participation in community organizations and the discipline as relevant to the candidates expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach in a variety of formats including in-person online and/or in a hybrid format. All students faculty and staff are required to ensure their materials are digitally accessible and utilize standard technology platforms supported by UW-Whitewater. Examples include but are not limited to Navigate Canvas and Microsoft Office applications including Outlook which is essential for university email communications and scheduling.

Provide artistic and administrative leadership in the orchestral music program at UW Whitewater; direct the Whitewater Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra; teach conducting and a core interdisciplinary arts course; perform additional duties according to the qualifications of the successful candidate and the needs of the department which might include applied music instruction and additional music or music education coursework; participate in departmental activities recruiting and outreach.

The Department of Music with over 160 music majors 75 music minors and 30 full or part time faculty and staff is a division of the College of Arts and Communication and is a fully accredited member of NASM. The Department offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees with emphases in Music Education Performance and History/Theory.

Compensation:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary of $54500.

Required Qualifications:

Earned Doctorate or terminal degree required. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2026; if not they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2027 in advance of their first scheduled review. Orchestral conductor with a strong commitment to undergraduate music education; demonstrated excellence in musicianship and rehearsal techniques; well-developed communication skills and organizational abilities; demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher at the college level; ability to work collaboratively in a university environment; strong commitment to recruiting. Clear evidence of scholarly potential commitment to working with diverse populations and serving as active member of the university community.
