Job Description Summary:

Department of Cancer Biology KUMC is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Danny Welch as a postdoctoral trainee in the field of cancer metastasis. The Welchs lab investigates the basic and translational research focus of the laboratory involves discovery of and determination of the mechanisms of action of metastasis-regulatory genes and proteins. The successful candidate is expected to perform research by contributing to the design of experiments data acquisition data analysis and interpretation manuscript preparation and mentor junior researchers.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Research Overview: Work with PI/faculty mentor to design and perform experiments exploring cancer metastasis using cell biological biochemical and/or molecular techniques to determine mechanisms of action of metastasis suppressor genes.

  • Interpretation of experimental results and analysis of data to use in publications grants and determining next steps in the needed for the research.

  • Perform experiments requiring the flexibility and adaptability to execute a wide range of skills to perform a variety of bench experiments and utilize the labs equipment. This includes but not limited to working with conducting animal model studies to study metastasis.

  • Perform routine animal maintenance surgery and model generation.

Postdoc Expectations: The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.

  • Read literature articles develop new ideas and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.

  • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.

  • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at scientific meetings. Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts manuscripts and posters.

  • Submit fellowship applications as eligible to bolster research funding and CV building for projects.

  • Interact with KU Cancer Center donors and local cancer affiliates.

Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Cancer Biology Department understand and follow IACUC and biosafety protocols and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.

Required Qualifications

Education: DVM MD DO or PhD in in biology biological sciences life sciences or related field.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements institutional standards of academic and professional excellence alignment with peer institution benchmarks and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Experience in molecular biology transfection gene expression PCR Q PCR arrays) biochemistry immunoblotting flow cytometry and/or protein-protein interaction.

  • Experience with animals (especially mice).

Skills:

  • Data recording and analytical skills.

  • Track record of publications.

  • Interpersonal presentation verbal and written communication skills.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to education experience and training qualifications relative to the requirements of the position and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
