This is a salaried position

Cardiac perfusionists set up and operate medical machines that take over the functions of the lungs and the hearts of patients during surgical procedures.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

Provision of Patient Care.

  • Assure timely accurate and quality focused excellence in the provision of extracorporeal circulation.
  • Perform extracorporeal circulation according to the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology perfusion scope of practice and in accordance with institutional protocols policies procedures and guidelines.
  • Perform extracorporeal circulation according to physician prescribed instructions.
  • Insure that all equipment used during clinical practice is properly maintained and available when necessary to meet the surgeon and patient care requirements.
  • Available and adequately prepared for each case in a timely fashion.
  • Administer patient care in a proficient and professional manner utilizing current technology.
  • Initiate individualize and implement a perfusion care plan for each patient requiring perfusion services.
  • Recognize significant changes in the patients condition establish priorities and take appropriate action.
  • Establish priorities in the delivery of patient care.
  • Demonstrate utilization of knowledge and skills related to meeting age specific needs of the patient population served.
  • Collaborate with Medical Staff and other health care providers to coordinate medical and perfusion management of patient care.
  • Demonstrate respect for patients right and ensures confidentiality.

Professional and Personal Growth.

  • Maintain the appropriate education and proficiency of skills required to perform routine extracorporeal responsibilities.
  • Participate in continuing education to maintain competency and to keep informed of changes affecting perfusionists and healthcare.
  • Serve on committees.
  • Share knowledge and expertise by participating and/or providing inservices and patient care conferences.
  • Ensure the development of policies procedure guidelines orientation material and skills checklists as requested.
  • Act as a positive role model.
  • Maintain educational records.

Health Care Team Participation.

  • Promote and participate in a collaborative approach with all team members.
  • Utilize effective appropriate and timely communication skills.
  • Initiate and perform duties which need to be completed although not directly assigned.
  • Communicate issues appropriately and participate in their resolution.

Performance Improvement.

  • Identify problems and opportunities in current perfusion practice.
  • Incorporate changes in perfusion practice identified through the performance improvement process.
  • Participate in data collection activities and develop action plans based on outcomes.
  • Utilize research findings to support changes in perfusion practice.
  • Quality controls are performed as required on all necessary equipment.
  • Minor equipment maintenance and repairs are performed as needed.

  • Comply with safety policies and procedures regulatory requirements such as Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and participate in corporate-wide safety activities.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited educational program in perfusion by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAHEP) and the Perfusion Program Directors Council (PPDC).
  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Masters degree preferred.


Experience

  • Two to five years clinical experience required as a perfusionist.
  • One to two years management experience preferred.


License/Certifications

  • Current Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) required.
  • Current Nebraska Perfusion (LP) Licenserequired.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire required within 3 months of hire.


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills to act as a problem definer problem solver and negotiator while working with complex variables including multiple departments and procedures diverse groups and sophisticated integrated systems.
  • Computer experience required (MS Word MS Excel MS Access email etc.).
