POSITION OVERVIEW

The BDC Seed Venture Fund is an early-stage venture capital fund that seeks to invest in the next generation of built-in-Canada global leaders. The fund works with companies across all seed-stages from as early as inception and collaborates deeply with early-stage ecosystem stakeholders including accelerators incubators and angel groups. Thematic areas of interest include sectors that are poised to be transformed in the coming decade including industrials/agriculture climate/sustainability defense and computing although we like to invest at the edges and therefore remain open to investing across all emerging trends and technologies. Post-investment the team works closely with portfolio companies and leverages its experience and networks to assist across company operations including go-to-market hiring fundraising and helping portfolio companies become Series A ready.

You are someone who wants to be a great partner to founders someone who will be both a thought-partner and will get their hands dirty to help founders solve their most pressing problems. You are an independent thinker and can build conviction in the midst of incomplete information. You thrive connecting with others you are collaborative and like to teach and learn from peers. Youre hungry and motivated to drive impact for your team and the founders you work with.

Your primary responsibility will be helping to manage the daily operations of the fund including:

• Identifying new and interesting entrepreneurs and companies that align with our areas of interest

• Performing market research and due diligence for potential investments

• Reporting on our portfolio companies including preparing semi-annual updates

• Working with existing portfolio companies including helping with go-to-market product hiring financial modeling and research

• Executing projects of your own creation that will help build our platform improve our operations or support our portfolio companies

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Our future teammate is someone who demonstrates:

• Native understanding of the startup ecosystem and awareness of emerging technology trends

• Strong written and oral communication skills

• Good fundamental business instincts you see the full picture of a business and how all the functions work together

• Strong interpersonal skills youll often be talking to entrepreneurs and other investors

• Data-driven thinking and good Excel modeling skills

• Ideally prior design or engineering experience (either software or hardware) or work in an investment-related position

• Technical skills in either category or ideally a mix of both: software/hardware/AI/ML or product/sales/operations/GTM

• What is an example of a time you went above and beyond or saw around a corner for a customer (A customer could be in the true sense of the word or an internal stakeholder who was relying on your work)

• What is an example of an initiative you took or side project youve worked on outside of work or school

Typical Professional Background

• 5 years of experience in a role involving critical thinking product/engineering financial analysis and/or other technical expertise.

• Bachelors degree in science technology engineering mathematics commerce or economics. Philosophy and psychology also viable with demonstrated technical aptitude.

• A post-graduate degree or equivalent certification is valuable including but not limited to: Masters in business administration (MBA) other STEM Masters or PhD degree Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).
