Job Summary

Job Title: CNC Laser Tube & Flat Programmer (Desk-Based)
Reports To: Engineering Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time (Non-Exempt/Exempt TBD)
Department: Manufacturing Engineering
Schedule: 1st Shift (6:00 AM 2:30 PM) occasional OT/weekends as needed

Position Summary:
Create review and optimize CNC laser cutting programs-primarily for tube and flat parts-supporting production of transit vehicle components. This is primarily a desk-based role within the engineering department focused on 3D programming file prep and manufacturability checks. Limited machine operation exposure may occur for prove-outs or troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Programming & CAM:

    • Generate and edit programs for laser tube and flat-bed cutting using 3D workflows (preferred) including post-processing to machine-ready formats (e.g. .LST).

    • Build toolpaths nests and cut strategies; assign pierce points lead-ins/outs and micro-tabs to meet quality and throughput targets.

    • Perform manufacturability reviews (geometry bend-relief kerf/heat effects collision risks tube support) and optimize cycle times and material yield.

    • Create first-article (FAI) programs and revision updates; maintain version control and clear naming conventions.

  • Drawings & Data Integrity:

    • Read and interpret engineering prints (GD&T basics) 3D models BOMs and work orders.

    • Validate model integrity (units material thickness tube profiles) edge conditions and feature orientation prior to posting.

    • Ensure program metadata matches traveler (material thickness cut gas nozzle lens) and downstream routing.

  • Machine/Process Support:

    • Support programming for Trumpf TruLaser Tube 5000 fiber (tube) and flat-bed lasers; advise on parameters (assist gas power feed frequency) and consumables.

    • Partner with production and QC on first-piece validation; adjust programs for edge quality burr control and dimensional accuracy.

    • Provide concise setup notes for operators (work offsets/zero chuck/mandrel requirements clamps tube orientation).

  • Material Flow & Documentation:

    • Stage digital kits for jobs (programs setup sheets cut lists nests) and release to the floor.

    • Track and update program libraries; document best practices and standard cut settings.

    • Log issues (material shortages programming constraints) and propose corrective actions.

  • Continuous Improvement:

    • Drive yield uptime and quality improvements through better nesting and cut strategies.

    • Collaborate with engineering on design-for-manufacture (DFM) feedback for tube and flat parts.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certificate or AS in Manufacturing/Mechanical Technology preferred.

  • 2 years CNC laser programming experience (tube and flat preferred).

  • 3D modeling proficiency (SolidWorks preferred); comfort moving between 3D CAD and CAM.

  • Familiarity with CNC programming formats .LST files and laser post-processors; G/M code literacy a plus.

  • Able to read engineering drawings/prints; basic GD&T and shop math.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving; excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office).

  • Nice to have: Forklift/overhead crane familiarity (for floor collaboration); experience with FAI and in-process quality checks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily desk/computer work; occasional standing/walking on the shop floor for prove-outs.

  • Lift up to 40 lbs occasionally (fixtures/samples) with assistance as needed.

Work Environment:

  • Office adjacent to a manufacturing floor with laser cutting welding and material handling.

  • Standard 1st shift (6:00 AM 2:30 PM) with occasional overtime/weekends based on production needs.

Notes:

  • Role emphasizes programming over machine operation; some machine-side interaction may be required during trials or troubleshooting.

  • This description summarizes core duties and may be adjusted based on business needs.
