Title of Job:Patient Assistant
Reports to:Clinical Nurse Manager/ Senior Nurse on duty/Site Manager
Type of Contract: Permanent Full Time 39 hours per week
Purpose of the Role
The Patient Assistant will provide direct observation and limited patient care to assigned patients under the direct supervision and direction of the patients allocated staff nurse who is responsible for the provision of care to the patient
Key duties and responsibilities
Under the general direction and control of the CNM 11/Site Manager the patient assistant will be responsible for the following:
To supervise and observe patient to minimise risk of falls wandering.
Mitigate falls risks by:
Ensuring patient room is generally kept tidy and is clear of any obstructions.
Floor is tidy and dry and patient has nonslip socks or appropriate footwear
Patient has glasses and/or hearing aid both clean and in working order
Escalate immediately concerns and seek appropriate help form patients allocated nurse if a cause for concern is identified.
Report to patient allocated nurse if patients complain of pain or any anxiety or distress as expressed by the patient or request from relatives.
To assist patient with walking and exercising as directed by the nursing team.
Identifying patients social interaction needs in conjunction with the Healthcare Assistant and Staff Nurse allocated to the patient.
To support social interaction through various means of communication : conversation reading to patient radio and/or television preferences doing puzzles jigsaws crosswords.
Assist patient to make telephone/video call and communicate with family members and friends.
Answering telephone call made to the patient and assist patient in taking the call may need to use loudspeaker/Video to enhance patient communication experience with family and friends.
Ensure patient has easy access (within reach) to personal items such as mobile phone glasses radio etc.
Attend training and education session that pertain to the role :
Infection Control including Hand Hygiene
Patient Manual Handling
Communication Skills
GDPR & professionalism
Hospital Orientation programme
Health & Safety Fire training
Medical Emergency Activation Protocol
Be familiar with hospital policies in relation to fire health and safety infection control smoking and dress code manual handling incident reporting.
Additional Tasks
The below tasks can only be delegated to a Patient Assistant when a family member or friend are present with the patient. Before the Patient Assistant leaves the patient they need to ensure that the family member/friends are happy to take responsibility for the patient in their absence.
Interdepartmental transfers of well patients
Supervise mealtimes
Clean equipment
Unpack linen bags
Answer call bells
Answer ward phone
General ward tidiness
Empty bins
Restocking on ward.
Relieve another CSW to take their breaks
Mobilise other patients on the ward as instructed
