Job Summary:

Please carefully read the following requirements:

  • Current enrollment in an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Program (August 2026 August 2027 Graduates)

  • Successful completion of Fundamentals and a medical surgical clinical course or equivalent prior to start of Extern Program in May 2026

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Application resume and cover letter stating reasons candidate believes he/she should be selected for the position and listing top three areas of nursing for placement

  • Available for the entire 8 to 10-week obligation 24-36 hours per week starting May through July.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

To provide nursing care for hospital patients following established standards and practices and in accordance with the S.C. Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Any nursing student currently enrolled in an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing program who anticipates graduation within one year of completion of the Student Nurse Extern program. GPA equal to 3.0 or above and has completed nursing fundamentals and a medical-surgical clinical course or equivalent prior to start of Student Nurse Extern program are required.

The Summer Student Nurse Extern program is an 8 to 10-week obligation 24-36 hours per week starting May through July.

Experience: Ability to use office equipment such as telephones and computer terminals. Ability to use clinical equipment such as infusion pumps and suction devices.

Licensure/Certification: Must have a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card.

Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of patient care tasks and techniques to provide nursing care. Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures to provide patient care. Skill in preparing and maintaining records. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Ability to react calmly and effectively in nursing situations. Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to care for the specific patient population/age groups to which staff member is assigned. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
