Job Description SummaryThe Senior Financial Analyst is part of VP Finance and Operations (FRO) in the Financial Reporting group. This position prepares the University s consolidated quarterly financial statements regulatory submission and various annual regulatory reporting requirements. This position also prepares the audited annual financial statements and the related note disclosures and advises auditors regarding information requests this includes: the preparation of complex analysis to explain variances investigate exceptions assess correct accounting treatment and identifying process improvements. The Senior Financial Analyst will develop and implement new policies and procedures to improve financial management and business processes throughout the portfolio.
Organizational StatusThe Senior Financial Analyst reports to the Associate Director of Financial Reporting.
Work is done in collaboration with Research and Trust Accounting Budget and Planning Office Financial Operations IT Services Internal Audit provincial and federal governments and external auditors.
Work Performed- Manage the daily monthly and annual accounting processes and year end activities..
- Perform ad hoc analysis of complex reporting issues for the UBC organization as a whole involving multiple entities. Provide executive summaries of results and recommendations for decision making.
- Lead business or system process reengineering as required to improve efficiency or in response to legislative or regulatory changes.
- Review and develop financial systems business process dataflow and training to improve the administration of financial accounting .
- Provide insight to senior management into significant financial risks and make practical recommendations to reduce risk improve performance and increase management confidence. Provide solutions to effectively manage change combat employee resistance and build executive support for projects.
- Analyze complex accounts on a quarterly basis results submitted internally and externally.
- Responsible for the review and analysis of the quarterly and annual financial statements and management reports. The review includes an analytical review of the accuracy of the actual data and projections and the identification of: variances from budget; action items for the management team red flags growth areas etc.
- Provide expert advice guidance and direction in complex areas to the Financial Reporting team in preparation and analysis of quarterly and annual financial statements and forecasts of the University. Activities include variance analysis Board Submission presentations report generation researching and answering audit queries.
- Provide expert advice guidance and direction to the Budget Office in the annual budget process and ongoing forecast of the University. This involves working closely with the Budget Office as assigned to help the university community properly use the system and extract reports.
- As a functional lead develop new innovative and update existing processes and reports in the University financial system (PeopleSoft) and budgeting system (Hyperion) in response to user requirements.
- Develop and supports reporting requirements related to PeopleSoft Query PeopleSoft nVision Hyperion Financial Reporting Hyperion SmartView with Management Reporting team.
- Keep current on regulatory requirements of accounting standards and UBC Policy to effectively advise and guide units.
- Liaise with external auditors province and the Office of the Comptroller General.
- Perform other duties assigned as required.
Consequence of Error/JudgementAccounting errors could cause serious inaccuracies in the University s records perhaps resulting in errors in the financial statements. Due to the senior level of this position financial statement errors could lead to incorrect decisions by the executive and the Board and could damage the reputation of the University adversely affecting its ability to raise funds. A high degree of judgment technical expertise and strategic thinking is required.

Preferred QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and completion of the CPA Accounting program (CA CGA or CMA).A minimum of 7 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and least 7 years of accounting experience. Supervisory or training experience an asset. Proven experience in performing complex data analysis analyzing business processes and implementing change in work or training experience an experience is oral and written communication problem identification problem solving analytical and organizational skills to provide solutions to complex problems independently and to work in a deadline-driven be able to multi-task set priorities and meet degree of analytical accuracy thoroughness and be a team player and be highly of computerized financial accounting organizational skills.
