Position: Professor of Practice in Art
Department: Art and Design
Location: Des Moines IA
Effective Date: Fall Semester 2026
The Art and Design Department at Grand View University invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice in Studio Art with an emphasis on Drawing and Painting beginning in Fall 2026.
The successful candidate will bring a record of teaching excellence and a demonstrated ability to inspire students in and out of the classroom. The ideal candidate will be able to bridge the gapbetween foundation design classes studio and graphic design courses supporting our four majors (Studio Graphic Game and Art Education).
Faculty in the Art department contribute not only through teaching but also through active participation in the department and university service including participation in faculty meetings committee work and student recruitment and retention. We especially value candidates whose creative practice and pedagogical approach demonstrate a commitment to teaching.
Responsibilities:
- Teach a range of courses at the undergraduate levels
- Participate in curriculum revision and development as well as department programming and events.
- Participate in committee work and other services to the department and the university.
- Advise and mentor students.
- Maintain substantial creative accomplishments and participation in the field including scholarship/research/publications and conferences.
- Perform all other related activities as required.

Qualifications
- The successful candidate must have a MFA or related field or equivalent professional experience
- Four or more years of teaching experience at the college level.
- A record of professional accomplishment as demonstrated through a portfolio detailing teaching and practice projects grants awards publications and an active exhibition record.
- Strong understanding of historical and contemporary issues.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse populations.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated success in teaching lecturing or mentoring students either in an academic or professional setting preferably in higher education in studio art or design programs
- Demonstrated versatility across both traditional and digital media
- A passion for teaching and a commitment to fostering a learning environment that encourages creativity critical thinking and professional growth among students
- Experience working in painting drawing or the design field
- An understanding of contemporary art and design history
