ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY STATEMENT
As a part of the Leadership & Community Service-Learning Office in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union-Center for Campus Life the Coordinator for Social Action and Democratic Engagement engages students in short-term social action immersion experiences and non-partisan voter education and engagement that address critical issues in local national and international communities. Alongside our long-term mutually beneficial community partnerships students develop as socially responsible leaders through education direct service action and reflection. Specifically the coordinator leads the development implementation and assessment of the Alternative Breaks (AB) and TerpsVote programs. LCSL provides educational programs that foster socially responsible leadership skills and mindsets within personal civic and professional contexts. This position reflects a key value of LCSLs work helping students develop critical perspectives and become agents for change through transformative experiential learning community engagement advocacy and social action.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
30%- Program Strategy & Partnership Development
Research and cultivate sustainable and reciprocal relationships with campus local state and national community and organizational partners to support student experiences
Chair convene manage and set strategic vision for university-wide TerpsVote Coalition- an active group of over 25 student leaders staff and faculty representing multiple academic departments and diverse areas of campus- that provides campus leadership and deepens campus buy-in to advance student voter engagement
Develop campus-wide strategy and reports for student voter engagement at UMD including completion of action plans serving as the campus Student Voting Coordinator and liaising to national and state organizations
Raise awareness of democratic engagement voter education civic leadership service-learning social action and community engagement and its benefits to stakeholders through presentations and campus/community initiatives
Work with development staff to steward alternative break scholarship funds and pursue grant opportunities related to social action and democratic engagement as available
30%- Program Administration
Oversee program logistics and administrative processes including partnership agreements event planning marketing participant tracking and communication and website and online platform maintenance
Manage program budgets including fiscal year proposals expense tracking requests and reports for purchasing and travel
Implement assessment and evaluation of programs initiatives and student learning to inform continuous improvement and evidence based decision-making; Facilitate campus participation in the National Study of Learning Voting and Engagement
Provide planning and training on safety and risk management serve as on-call staff and ensure fiscal safety and conduct policies are followed for UMD students traveling in country and internationally each year as part of winter spring and summer alternative breaks programming
Design learning curricula for alternative breaks participants and student voters utilizing current evidence-based practices theory and approaches in the field
30%- Supervision Training & Advising
Recruit train and support Alternative Breaks interns experience leaders and faculty/staff advisors as they implement alternative break programming
Recruit hire and supervise TerpsVote interns and student ambassadors in planning and executing initiatives to promote voting and civic engagement to the campus community
Hire train and provide developmental supervision for 1 Graduate Assistant
10%- Unit & Departmental Initiatives
Contribute to LCSL-wide initiatives including assessment reports student leader events staff training and development and other duties as assigned
Participate in department divisional and/or campus-wide committees that advance leadership development and civic engagement for UMD students
Actively support unit departmental and divisional goals strategic initiatives committees and events.
PREFERENCES
Masters degree in higher education international education student affairs public policy or related field.
Demonstrated experience facilitating service-learning and community engagement experiences with college students including immersion experiences/alternative breaks.
Demonstrated experience in non-partisan civic engagement democratic education and voter engagement programming.
Proficiency in Google Suite Concur and Workday for administrative tasks.
Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated experience with fiscal management fundraising risk management contract negotiation personnel management and advising of student and/or professional staff.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
--Ability to sit or stand for extended periods during work hours.
--Use of hands and fingers for typing writing and operating office equipment.
--This position may require flexibility in work hours to accommodate student events courses and programming. The Coordinator may occasionally be asked to work outside of regular business hours including evenings or weekends.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: One (1) year of professional administrative or coordinator experience.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES:
Knowledge of best practices in organization administration and customer service.
Knowledge of proper protocol in dealing with confidential information.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (Docs Sheets Slides Forms etc.)
Ability to interpret and apply policies procedures regulations and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.
