To provide a high level of nursing care as a wound ostomy and continence nurse (WOCN) by managing conditions such as stomas draining wounds fistulas vascular ulcers pressure ulcers neuropathic wounds urinary continence fecal incontinence and functional disorders of the bowel and bladder. To plan implement and assess individual nursing care plans establish priorities assign and assist nursing and ancillary personnel orients new staff and communicates policy within established guidelines and procedures. To educate other healthcare providers in the areas of ostomy care wound management and prevention and management of skin breakdown and incontinence.
Bachelors degree in Nursing and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Credentialed as a Wound Ostomy and Continence (WOC) Nurse by the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB) within one (1) year of date of hire required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Depending on the unit/department Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
