The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Measurement Standards & Commercial Vehicle Compliance is looking for a Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1/2 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

BASE SALARY INFORMATION

Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1 - $25.74 / hourly
Commercial vehicle Compliance Inspector 2 - $29.36 / hourly

What you will be doing:
As a Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector you will work with motor carriers to perform safety inspections on commercial vehicles and their drivers to ensure safety on Alaskas roadways. Your work will make a difference by leading to a reduction in crash fatalities. You will also preserve roads and bridges through size and weight compliance by weighing and measuring commercial vehicles; your ability to identify unsafe vehicles based on federal and state regulations will allow you to take appropriate enforcement action including issuing citations.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is based at a Fairbanks fixed weigh station with potential to travel to various roadside locations throughout the state. Various shifts available.

  • North American Standard Course Parts A and B Certification (Motor Carrier Improvement Act of 1999 Title 49 CFR Part 350 AS 19.60 17 AAC)

  • Must obtain and maintain Certificate of Commission as Special Officer issued by the Commissioner of Public Safety. (AS 18.65.010 Motor Carrier Improvement Act of 1999 Title 49 CFR Part 350 AS 19.60 17 AAC)

  • Valid Alaska Drivers License (AS 28.15.011(b))

  • Incumbent must pass a background investigation including fingerprinting and be issued a security clearance in order to be granted access to Criminal Justice Information Systems. This clearance must be maintained throughout the length of employment. (Motor Carrier Improvement Act of 1999 Title 49 CFR Part 350 AS 19.10 17 AAC)

Minimum Qualifications

Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1
High school diploma or General Educational Development certificate.
AND
Work experience that demonstrates the knowledge and skills required of the job including written and verbal communication use of general office computer programs situational awareness and safety awareness.
AND
Must be at least 19 years of age at time of appointment per AS 18.65.010.

Special Note for Option 1 only:
Must possess a valid Alaska Drivers License.
Appointment and retention in this job class is dependent upon successful completion of a background investigation that includes fingerprinting and obtain security clearance to access criminal justice information systems.
Incumbents are required to work irregular hours or staggered shifts.
As a condition of continued employment incumbents must obtain and maintain:
1) a Certificate of Commission as Special Officer issued by the Commissioner of Public Safety within six months of hire
2) North American Standard A and B Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration certifications.


Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 2
Possession of North American Standard A and B Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration certifications.
AND EITHER
Successful completion of the Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector Training Plan.
OR
One year of experience at the trainee level learning and applying the principles of commercial motor vehicle size weight and safety regulation and enforcement. The required experience is met by service as a Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1 (Option 1) with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Special Note:
Must possess a valid Alaska Drivers License.
Appointment and retention in this job class is dependent upon successful completion of a background investigation that includes fingerprinting and obtain security clearance to access criminal justice information systems.
Incumbents are required to work irregular hours or staggered shifts.
An applicant who has previously held required certifications and/or meets the eligibility requirements to obtain/reobtain the certificates and who meets the experience requirement may apply for a vacancy.
As a condition of continued employment incumbents must obtain and/or maintain:
1) a Certificate of Commission as Special Officer issued by the Commissioner of Public Safety within six months of hire.
2) North American Standard A and B Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration certifications within 12 months of hire.

DRIVERS LICENSE REQUIREMENT
Applicants must possess a valid drivers license. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.

APSIN CLEARANCE
Candidates for this position must obtain and maintain Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) certification which requires fingerprinting and a criminal background check. A felony conviction disqualifies a person from APSIN certification. Misdemeanor convictions may also disqualify a person from APSIN certification. The successful applicant must pass a fingerprint-based criminal history record check as well as a comprehensive background investigation.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1 or 2 level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. Please respond to all the minimum qualification questions. If filled at a lower level incumbent will have the opportunity to advance to the next level upon managements assessment that the incumbent is performing adequately and has successfully completed the training plan and meets the minimum qualifications of the higher level.
