The Opportunity
Expressions of interest are sought from outstandingdomestic and international candidatesforPhDstudywithin theDepartment of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Faculty of EngineeringMonash University.

This PhD project will contribute to MSEs strategic research initiative onaccelerating Australian greenironmaking addressing critical challenges in the transition to sustainable metallurgical processes. Thesuccessful candidate will develop afundamental scientific frameworkto tackle key research questionsin the Australian context including impurity management microstructure evolution ore processingand the development of green ironmaking infrastructure.

Monash University hosts aunique suite of green ironmaking characterisation facilities offeringexceptional opportunities to performin-situ and high-resolution materials analysis. Leveraging thesestate-of-the-art research capabilities the candidate will conduct high-quality impactful researchinhigh-temperature materials science with a particular focus onphase transformations in ceramicsmetals and other solid-state systems.

The PhD candidate will join theMSE Metallurgy and Corrosion cluster working withinamultidisciplinary team spanning theory advanced characterisation and computational environment provides an excellent platform for developing expertise in materials science andcontributing to Australias leadership ingreen and sustainable metallurgical innovation.

Scholarship opportunitiesare available for both domestic and international applicants. This is afully
funded PhD projectand is open to candidates from all backgrounds. Candidate Requirements
Applications are invited from candidates with backgrounds inMaterials Science MetallurgicalEngineering Mechanical Engineering Solid-State Physics Chemical Engineering or a closelyrelated discipline.

Applicants must demonstrate:

• A strong interest inthermodynamics kinetics and microstructure evolutionin materialsunder high-temperature conditions;
• The ability to conductindependent self-motivated research; and
• Excellentcommunication teamwork and problem-solvingskills.

Applicants will be considered provided they fulfil the criteria for Masters by Research & PhDadmission at Monash University. Details of the relevant requirements are availableat application will be looked upon favourably if you:Graduated in the top 10% of your year level

• Graduated from a well ranked university
• Have authored peer-reviewed research publications
• Possess excellent written and verbal English skills

Note: applicants who already hold a PhD degree will not be considered.

Applicants must show excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to conductself-motivated research. They should have either completed or in the process of completing aBachelors H1 Honours Degree or already hold an H1E Bachelors and/or Masters degree. Candidateswho are in the process of completing their H1 degree will be considered. Masters by Engineering
Science (Research) degree students have the option to upgrade to a PhD degree based on academicperformance during their candidature.

2. Contact the project supervisor
Interested applicants should first send aCV and academic transcripttoDr Yuxiang Wu()to discuss the project and obtain supervisor support for theirapplication. Supervisor endorsement is required before submitting an Expression of Interest.

3. Submit an expression of interest
Once you have discussed your application with Dr Wu and confirmed his support completetheExpression of Interest formand submit this directly to the potential supervisor or therelevant departments administrative staff.

Please note the submission of the Expression of Interest does not constitute a formal
application for a Research Degree.

4. Obtain an invitation to apply
If after assessing your Expression of Interest the potential supervisor has the suitableresources and expertise to take you on as a graduate research student you will be suppliedwith an Invitation to Apply.

All applicants are required to upload a copy of their invitation to apply with their formalapplication. Applications without this will not be considered.
