Under the supervision of the Technical Supervisor of Surgical Pathology the Surgical Pathology Specialist processes a full range of non-complex* human surgical pathology specimens in a high-volume academic setting. Responsibilities include triaging and accessioning all specimen types received in the Surgical Grossing Room serving as the first line of quality control during the accessioning process by troubleshooting specimens with insufficient documentation or required clinical information and providing instruction to resident trainees on non-complex specimen handling. Additional duties include assisting with other technical and administrative tasks in the laboratory.
*Non-complex specimens are defined by the Anatomic Pathology Medical Director as clinical biopsies including but not limited to gastrointestinal cardiac breast renal dermatologic and bone and soft tissue specimens.

Specializes in the diagnosis and study of diseases by examining tissues cells and bodily fluids. Responsible for identifying abnormalities that can help diagnose diseases and manage treatment. This role works independently under direct and indirect supervision and performs technical and clerical tasks required for efficient functioning of the laboratory and morgue.

Essential Functions
Examines tissues and cells to diagnose diseases and conditions.
Consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals to discuss diagnoses and treatment options.
Provides expert advice and consultation to healthcare professionals and patients regarding test results and treatment options.
Assists with lab maintenance including cleaning restocking and specimen discarding.
Performs autopsy service duties including ensuring all procedures are followed in the autopsy suite and morgue identifying patients and assisting with external exams.
Accurately triages and accessions all specimens.
