The University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has an exciting full time opportunity for a Recovery Technician Eye Bank in Miami Florida. The Recovery Technician Eye Bank retrieves and processes ocular tissue for surgical and research use

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

• Reviews cases available for corneal removal and determines medical suitability of potential donors by reading and screening medical charts and speaking to investigators medical examiners and law enforcement officers.

• Retrieves tissue from legally consented donors using appropriate procedures.

• Obtains donors medical information and completes all documentation required for donors record.

• Performs specular microscopy on surgical quality corneas to obtain an endothelial cell count.

• Preserves sclera tissue in cornea lab and processes and packages blood for serology testing.

• Ensures that all necessary tissue has been graded and assists with slit lamp examination.

• Trains residents funeral directors and new technicians on eye bank techniques.

• Prepares instrument kits for sterilization maintains storage supply and assists in distributing tissue for research or practice.

• Harvests whole eyes for pathology and maintains documentation of regular laboratory cleaning schedules.

• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

Knowledge Skills and Attitudes:

• Ability to analyze organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

• Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

• Ability to work evenings nights and weekends as necessary.
