This position has the authority responsibility and accountability for assessment planning implementation and evaluation of wound ostomy and continence (wound or skin/wound care for CWCN). Functions primarily as a consultant; provides direct patient care and education to selected patients. Provides staff development in areas of expertise. Maintains records and statistics reflecting role performance; participates in agency and system-wide committees and projects as indicated. Responsible for maintaining policies procedures and protocols for all aspects of wound and ostomy care.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduate of an accredited school or college of nursing. BSN preferred. Graduate from an accredited Wound Ostomy Continence or Wound Care Nursing Program; or currently enrolled in an accredited Wound Ostomy Continence or Wound Care Nursing Program with expected completion and certification obtained within six (6) months of hire.
For positions providing direct patient care with the nursing assessment requirement: BSN preferred or required within five (5) years of hire date. Current RN Teammates transferring to another RN position in the same department will not be required to complete BSN within five (5) years of transfer date. Current RN Teammates transferring to another RN position in the different department will be required to complete BSN within five (5) years of transfer date.
Experience: A minimum of two (2) years recent clinical experience.
Licensure/Certification: New grad RNs with a BON temporary work authorization must obtain Registered Nurse license within 90 days of hire. All other RNs must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of South Carolina or holds a current compact/multi-state license as a Registered Nurse in a recognized NCSBN Compact State and is not a permanent resident of Certification in Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing (WOCN) or Wound Nurse Certification (WCN) or able to obtain within 6 months of employment or completion of Wound and/or Ostomy school. Must have a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card.
Other: Requires ability to continually keep wound care knowledge base current and maintains
requirements as per board certification. Must have a valid S.C. drivers license with a good driving record.
Contacts: Community agencies and businesses agency personnel patient/families physicians and various medical field personnel.
Work Demands/Environment:
Frequent standing walking bending crouching stooping. Frequent lifting/moving patients. Intermittent lifting moving or carrying pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs. Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity. Constant reaching with hands/arms. Frequent talking or hearing. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Exposure to blood body fluids or tissue. Possible exposure to infectious materials communicable diseases and/or other conditions common to a healthcare environment. Intermittent exposure to risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Moderate noise level in work area. Requires work under stressful conditions deadlines or irregular hours. May be required to take call and/or work weekends/holidays based on the needs of the department. Home Health positions may have possible exposure to unclean environments toxic substances pharmaceutical preparations hazardous and unsafe driving conditions and other conditions common to delivery of health care in the community.
