At Vehicle Engineering our responsibility spans the entire chassis interior climate body & exterior functions mechanical Integration and a range of vehicle attributes with impact on design and customer experience of our complete product. Across these domains and all development cycles we will lead an effective delivery operation on a complete level in close sync with other Engineering units functions and stakeholders across the company.
This thesis work is within the group of Battery and Materials Data at the Material Engineering Center and more specifically work in the Materials Data team.
Integration of high-throughput mechanical testing in Volvo Cars material testing is necessary to produce large amounts of data with maintained quality. This work has been initiated as a continuation of a previous project where Cobot is incorporated in mechanical testing (Bending of metal plates). Automation and an increase in throughput an important steps to increase the speed of post-tensile analyses. How can we determine the quality of test results For example automate the identification of material imperfections and/or structure via image recognition.
Create a method to include automated post-test analysis of tensile tested samples group samples based on results for example with visual imperfections and/or microstructure differences. Material used could be recycled thermoplastic or cast aluminium. An important part is reviewing ongoing research and potential improvements to the proposed method.

Benchmark of other methods/technologies to create a method to determine the quality of the test (sample)
Create a method to analyse pictures
Automated identification of imperfections or microstructure and their possible effect
We are looking for one or preferably two students interested in the topic. The work will be conducted in a materials lab and most work needs to be done on site.
Tentative proposed thesis work period: 19th January 2026 to 26th of June 2026 (dates can be flexible with /- 7 days)
Academic credits: equivalent to 30 ECTS
Number of students: 1-2 students (2 students preferred)
