The City of Richmond Police Department is seeking qualified organized and detail-oriented candidates for the position of Property Evidence Technician. This class provides support functions for law enforcement activities and staff by receiving and storing police evidence for court purposes and disposal. Incumbents receive log and store property and prepare related reports and must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and not afraid of heights or ladder climbing.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Interacting with the public in person by telephone and by correspondence.
- Receive process label and store evidence and property.
- Release property or evidence as required to officers for court to owners or to other government agencies.
- Inventory and prepare items for lawful destruction.
- Process required reports.
- Receive inventory stock and issue departmental supplies and equipment.
- Provide guidance to staff members on proper procedures relating to the storage packaging and handling of property and evidence.
Work Environment and Conditions:
- Work in secure evidence storage facilities with controlled access.
- Regular handling of firearms narcotics biohazards currency and other sensitive or potentially hazardous materials and sometimes graphic in nature.
- Exposure to odors and Biohazard evidence.
- Frequent lifting and moving of items up to 50 pounds; use of ladders and protective equipment required.
- Potential call-back duties.
This position requires overtime and at times working some holidays and weekends.
Successful completion of an interview thorough background investigation to include a polygraph exam and drug/alcohol screening is required. Please note that the Police Department background process may take up to 45-60 days. An applicant disqualified from the Police background process may reapply a year after disqualification.
Qualifications Special Certifications and Licenses
Considerable knowledgeofcomputer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Outlook Word); electronic databases and related software applications such as Evidence TraQ Reports Management System (RMS) etc. Demonstrated skillsassisting law enforcement agencies regarding property and evidence; communicating with various internal and external departments; dealing with the public including in a front counter setting; following Officers instructions; restocking supplies; preparing reports or other written documentation; operating a telephone proficiently; typing proficiently. Demonstrated abilitiesservicing customers; flexibly bending climbing and lifting and working in a warehouse environment; following standard procedures and established practice to resolve problems; exhibiting excellent ethics and moral standards; possessing good work habits; handling firearms and narcotics safely; standing and moving around for long periods of time.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:- High School Diploma or GED
- Up to one year of related experience
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING CERTIFICATIONS and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record required
- VCIN Operators Certification
