ABOUT THE POSITION

Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture and Sea Duck Joint Venture are looking for a Communications and Marketing Coordinator to lead the development and delivery of communications strategy and content based on respective Joint Venture priorities and needs to increase the visibility and effectiveness of this collaborative work.

80%: Pacific Birds Communications and Marketing Coordinator

The Pacific Birds Communications and Marketing Coordinator leads the development direction and implementation of strategic communications and marketing that will amplify and advance the mission of Pacific Birds engage existing and new potential partners and provide services to partnerships. Success will be achieved through outreach campaigns newsletters storytelling presentations workshops social media and other communications and marketing services that inspire on-the-ground actions to protect habitats and human wellbeing influence policy transfer knowledge and provide an upbeat approach to conservation challenges.

The Communications and Marketing Coordinator will focus on the following areas:

Strategic Communications and Planning:

  • Develop and maintain a communications and marketing plan that advances engagement and action aroundPacific Birds conservation priorities national and international initiatives and includes delivery of services to conservation priority partners.
  • Identify and develop relevant stories and content delivered through multiple mediums including the Pacific Birds Newsletter and social media.
  • Lead the coordination and creation of an Annual Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture Conservation Reportto effectively communicate progress and accomplishments.
    • Work with Pacific Birds staff to identify partner needs and deliver strategic community-based social marketing conservation outreach and campaign development that considers human dimensions.
    • Represent Pacific Birds at relevant conferences workshops or other speaking events by delivering compelling and relevant content to specific audiences.
    • Evaluate and add to communication plans and materials produced by Conservation Coordinators or partners.

Maintain and Design Communications Products and Tools:

  • Curate and generate content forthe Pacific Birds eNewsletter and distribute.
  • Generate creative and original news posts feature stories videos website content talking points fact sheets graphics and social media posts.
  • Support Pacific Birds staff in content development needs associated with management board meetings fundraising opportunitiesdecision-maker outreach and other needs.
  • Maintain and update a relevant vibrant and updated websiteand social media accounts with timely news and creative digital media.
  • Facilitate the transfer of knowledge by working with staff to incorporate relevant science and knowledge into tools that improve communications and outreach for conservation.
  • Maintain internal and external communications subscriptions and organization of tools including but not limited to Microsoft 365 MailChimp BlueHost and Google Drive

Analysis and Evaluation

  • Using quantitative assessments compile and analyze data that track and evaluate the effectiveness of digital communications.
  • Identify and develop ways to assess qualitative engagementto improve outreach efforts.

Other

  • Ensure distribution of high-quality content including bird identification ecology and provision of appropriate credit for all content shared.
  • Keep up to date on conservation topics apprised of national and international efforts related to conservation communications and marketing and benchmarking with other Joint Ventures and partners to adjust communications delivery accordingly.
  • Support Pacific Birds staff in other needs related to work such as budgets travel logistics meeting preparation and print materials.

20%: Sea Duck Joint Venture Communications Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the SDJV US and Canada Coordinators and the SDJV Continental Technical Team to:

  • Maintain and update the SDJV communications implementation plan with creative new ideas to ensure we are effectively meeting our communications goals.
  • Identify and develop relevant stories and content including articles summaries of published research videos and podcasts highlighting SDJV-supported work and funding opportunities. Deliver content through multiple mediums including the SDJV Newsletter Canadas Habitat Matters magazine e-mail blasts social media and YouTube.
  • Work with partners to share SDJV stories and content through their communications channels for a larger reach.
  • Maintain and improve the SDJV website used as a repository for SDJV-supported research products and general information about SDJV and sea duck species.
  • Assist with facilitating SDJV Management Board and Continental Technical Team meetings and report communications progress successes and ideas to both teams.
  • Track the effectiveness of outreach and communications tools using both qualitative and quantitative methods.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors degree or higher (or equivalent experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree or higher) in communications journalism public relations marketing natural resources or related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in popular and technical writing and copy editing with a high level of

attention to detail to proof completed work to ensure accuracy.

  • Demonstrated project management experience high degree of organization and time management skills and ability to collaborate on cross-functional team projects from initiation to completion
  • Demonstrated skills in designing and delivering communications and storytelling using tools such as social media eNewsletters news posts fact sheets feature stories story maps and presentations.
  • Ability to effectively research and obtain relevant information quickly and to translate complex information regarding biological diversity fish and wildlife conservation cultural values and economic and environmental benefits and services provided by healthy and sustainably managed ecosystems to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently take initiative and innovate work on and coordinate multiple projects at a time support a team environment and meet deadlines.
  • Experience employing a variety of virtual meeting platforms and digital tools with an interest in pursuing emerging technologies for communications.
  • Experience developing and posting on websites using CRM and updating/managing social media accounts.
  • Demonstrated skills in applied conservation social science or conservation marketing to achieve outcomes.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to a week every other month at times.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Passion for conservation birds and their habitats people working lands and natural resources.
  • Knowledge of wildlife and conservation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a remote position. The desired physical location of the position is the Portland OR Seattle WA or Anchorage AK metro area or close to a regional airport within the Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Ventures region of operation with frequent services. The job predominantly involves computer-based activities but includes in-person meetings and field visits in the U.S. and Canada. Travel varies but is required to achieve mission-critical annual goals.

Pacific Birds and Sea Duck Joint Venture are primarily funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Communications and Marketing Coordinator will be administered as either an employee or contractor of Ducks Unlimited Inc. which serves as Pacific Birds primary fiscal agent.

We envision this as a full-time role commensurate with experience and ability to meet the needs of the Joint Ventures.
