About us

The Francis Crick Institute is Europes largest biomedical research institute under one roof. Our world-class scientists and staff collaborate on vital research to help prevent diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer heart disease infectious diseases and neurodegenerative conditions.

The Crick is a place for collaboration innovation and exploration across many disciplines. A space where the brightest minds can pursue big and bold ideas and discover answers to crucial scientific questions. We support them in a dynamic environment which fosters excellence with state-of-the-art infrastructure cutting-edge facilities and a creative and curious culture. Weve removed traditional boundaries of departments divisions and disciplines and instead have an open approach that supports every researcher. This gives us the freedom to take risks and carry out high-quality pioneering research. Creating a space for discovery without boundaries helps us to turn our science into benefits for human health and the economy.

About the role

The Znamenskiy lab studies the relationship between the in vivo function synaptic organization and molecular identity of cortical neurons. We aim to understand how connections between different neuronal cell types are organized and how this organization enables the computations they perform.

Mechanistic understanding of how networks of neurons carry out neural computations requires detailed knowledge of their underlying synaptic connectivity. However traditional methods for reconstructing synaptic connections are extremely laborious and typically limited to mapping connections between nearby neurons. To overcome this we have recently developed Barcoded Rabies In Situ Connectomics (BRISC) a new method that uses libraries of rabies viruses expressing random mRNA barcodes for a high-throughput circuit tracing.

BRISC has opened exciting new avenues for research aiming to understand how connectivity rules across different cell types and areas of the brain support neural computations and how they are altered in disease models. Multiple postdoctoral projects are available depending on your area of interest including:

  • Exploring the organisational principle of long-range cortico-cortical communications by mapping connections between different areas at the single cell level.

  • Identifying wiring defects in mouse models of neurological and psychiatric disease.

  • Relating gene expression patterns of single neurons to their synaptic connectivity.

If you have strong data analysis experience and a PHD in Neuroscience or a related field we would love to hear from you.

About you

You will have:

(Minimum criteria *)

  • PhD in Neuroscience or a related field or in the final stages of PhD submission *

  • Strong track record of scientific contribution as evidenced by publications preprints or submitted manuscripts *

  • Experience in coding in Python or MATLAB *
