Job Description Summary:

The University of Kansas Cancer Center (KUCC) and Department of Population Health seek candidates of exceptional potential and emerging scholarship to enhance our Cancer Prevention and Control research portfolio. We seek outstanding candidates who will play a major role in KUCCs population science initiatives to address cancer health disparities across the life course including tobacco control; lifestyle/obesity and biomarkers of cancer risk; cancer genetics; screening early detection and care delivery through cancer survivorship. Ideal candidates will have a progressive research agenda aimed at accelerating the uptake of evidence-based practices using innovative approaches and rigorous methods. Multiple hires are expected for a 12-month tenure-track.

The University of Kansas Cancer Center is the regions only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center where patients gain access to the most promising therapies cutting-edge clinical trials and world-class research. The Cancer Prevention and Control Program includes over 50 scientists across 3 campuses and multiple schools and departments (e.g. Family Medicine Internal Medicine Nursing Nutrition Population Health Psychology) across KU Medical Center KU Lawrence and Childrens Mercy Hospital. The Masonic Cancer Alliance is the KUCC outreach network linking hospital oncologists and primary care physicians nurses patients and their families throughout Kansas and Western Missouri to advance quality and reach of prevention and early detection treatment and survivorship care across the Heartland. KUCC investigators have access to exceptional campus resources to support the community engagement and recruitment quantitative analytics and health informatics with multiple opportunities for collaboration across clinical areas the KU School of Health Professions School of Nursing KU Alzheimers Disease Center KU Diabetes Institute and Frontiers Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

The Department of Population Health located in the School of Medicine provides a robust interdisciplinary research environment in an academic medical center setting. The Department is committed to addressing rural and urban health inequities through sustained partnership with community organizations government agencies health systems and other stakeholders serving communities and across the care delivery continuum in our rapidly growing multicultural Midwest context. The Department has hosted the statewide Kansas Cancer Registry since 1994. In addition to a record of partnership with state and regional health authorities population health scientists have long-standing collaborations with many communities and clinical partners providing a rich environment for impactful implementation science and community-engaged research. With faculty on three campuses Kansas City Wichita and Salina the Department is the academic home for graduate education leading to the MHSA MPH MSCR and PhD.

Competitive candidates will have a demonstrable research focus in population science such as behavioral interventions epidemiology healthcare delivery research implementation science or outcomes and health services research. Joint or secondary appointments for clinician investigators are possible.

  • Maintain an ongoing program of research and training with external funding appropriate to expertise.

  • Collaborate with other faculty members via interdisciplinary research teams.

  • Teach and participate in graduate courses and curriculum development.

  • Participate in the intellectual life of KUCC the Department and School of Medicine e.g. faculty committees and activities.

  • Provide other services to the school university profession and community as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

Education: Doctorate or equivalent with training in a population health field (e.g. nursing medicine or public health; health-related behavioral or social sciences).

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements institutional standards of academic and professional excellence alignment with peer institution benchmarks and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Work Experience:

  • Demonstrate research focus in Cancer Prevention and Control as above.

  • Experience with extramural funding via participation in recent grants and/or contracts appropriate to rank.

  • Experience working with scholarships in peer-reviewed publications appropriate to rank.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in principal investigator status.

  • Experience in team science implementation science and/or translational science.

  • Experience supervising and mentoring doctoral students.
