The practice of perfusion is defined as those functions necessary for the support treatment measurement or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient. A Perfusionist is a skilled person qualified by academic and clinical education who operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patients cardiopulmonary/circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Assessment selection assembly and management of cardiopulmonary bypass hardware and software and related technologies
  2. Assessment selection assembly and management of auto transfusion hardware and software and technologies
  3. Assessment selection and management of laboratory analyzers and their software
  4. Assessment and interpretation of laboratory quality control
  5. Assessment and interpretation of preop patients clinical status using patient history patient laboratory analysis and patient catheterization report
  6. Assessment and interpretation of patients medical status on CPB using but not limited to laboratory analysis hemodynamics fluid balance oxygen transfer and heat transfer
  7. The safe performance and/or management of;
    1. Counter pulsation
    2. Circulatory support ventricular assistance
    3. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
    4. Blood conservation techniques / auto transfusion
    5. Myocardial preservation
    6. Anticoagulation and hematologic monitoring / analysis
    7. Physiological monitoring / analysis
    8. Blood gas and blood chemistry monitoring / analysis
    9. Induction of hypothermia / hyperthermia with reversal
    10. Hemodilution
    11. Hemofiltration
    12. Administration of medications blood components and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit
    13. Isolated limb / organ perfusion
    14. Electrophysiological analysis
    15. Surgical Assistance
    16. Access for dialysis during CBP
    17. Documentation associated with described duty
  8. Performs other duties as requested by senior management

Required Qualifications

  1. A completed Bachelors degree
  2. Either certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and active Illinois State Licensure OR a graduate of a perfusion training program accredited by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion plus certification/licensure eligibility

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in Adult/Pediatric CPB Organ Transplant and Artificial Heart Assist Systems

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
