Performs duties described in the United States Department of Transportation/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration position description for EMT Paramedic including responding to requests for inter-facility transport of sick and injured patients; responding to requests from the public for emergency medical assistance; examining assessing and stabilizing patients at the point of call and during transport to the appropriate point of entry.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Administers skilled pre-hospital medical care to individuals in response to requests for emergency and non-emergency critical care treatment and transport in accordance with applicable Critical Care Transport (CCT) protocols and/or Massachusetts Statewide Pre-Hospital Treatment Protocols as necessary.
2. Examines assesses and stabilizes patients at emergency scene and/or point of origin of inter-facility transport. Obtains medical history. Checks vital signs. Advises/informs on-call physician of diagnostic indication.
3. Performs definitive basic and advanced life support when required.
4. Administers treatment and utilizes advanced life support equipment and procedures as directed by authorized physician(s) utilizing on- and off-line medical control.
5. Prepares patients for transport. Consults with radio communications specialist as to appropriate available medical facility in order to ensure immediate treatment of patient upon arrival. Monitors patient in ambulance or helicopter to maintain stability. Administers additional treatment enroute when necessary.
6. Assists with Intra-aortic balloon pump LVAD and ECMO therapy and any other therapies/modalities/interventions as determined to be necessary for effective patient care.
7. Demonstrates competence in the use of the following equipment and treatment modalities: extrication and spinal immobilization; transport ventilator; intraosseous needle insertion; infusion pumps; invasive pressure monitoring and endotracheal intubation.
8. Responds to a wide range of emergency and non-emergency transport situations. Triages and set priorities based on patients assessments and the individual needs of the patient.
9. Conducts triage treatment and transportation at mass casualty incidents including incidents involving terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Provides control at the scene of medical emergency.
10. Documents all care received by patients in order to facilitate admission and/or transfer to/from health care facilities.
11. Cares for all patient populations with acute and emergent medical conditions including (but not limited to) emergent urgent and non-urgent adult and pediatric patients; patients with psychiatric or behavioral situations; and patients requiring inter-facility transport.
12. Reports all mandatory reportable diseases and situations such as child and elder abuse; handicapped patient abuse. gunshot wounds stabbing burns and deaths and communicable disease and any other reportable conditions as may be required by protocol or regulation.
13. Maintains possession of and accountability for controlled substances as required by regulation.
14. Maintains up-to-date records of inventory of both narcotic and non-narcotic medications stored in vehicle and supply source at hospital. Ensures emergency vehicle is properly stocked with necessary supplies equipment and medications. Ensures that all medications and equipment are not expired and replaces as necessary. Inspects clears stocks ambulance or helicopter and maintains equipment to ensure and provide continuous availability of appropriately functional decontaminated units.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health required.
2. Current certification CPR - Basic Rescue or Basic Cardiac Life Support from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association required.
3. Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by the American Heart Association required.
4. Current certification Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) by the American Heart Association required.
5. Current certification (ATLS) Advanced trauma Life Support
6. Current certification (NRP) Neonatal Resuscitation.
7. Current valid driver license required.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Minimum five (5) years experience in EMS field with progressive experience including but not limited to advanced life support (ALS) emergency (911 system) experience ALS inter-facility transport experience or a combination of both.
2. Successful completion of advanced level inter-facility transport training to encompass critical care patient transport via air and/or ground is preferred. Within twelve (12) months of hire successful certification as a Flight Paramedic-Certified (FP-C) or Critical Care Paramedic- Certified (CCP-C) from the Board for Critical Care Transport Paramedic Certification (BCCTPC).
3. Outstanding inter-personal communications skills are required.
4. Experience in accident scene management and control demonstrated ability to work well under often stressful situations strong organizational skills and effective oral and written communication skills are required.
5. Proven competence in ambulance helicopter and other radio communications systems.

Unless certification licensure or registration is required an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered Heavy. Position requires work indoors and outdoors in a patient care environment.
