Nurse Practioner MS
In the Department of Radiation Oncology the Nurse Practitioner (NP) can expect to have the unique opportunity to work collaboratively with radiation oncology physician while also practicing independently within the Department. While the NP can expect a relatively predictable schedule planned whenever possible scheduling variations may occur to cover clinical needs as they become apparent.
Department of Radiation Oncology specific responsibilities may include:
Run an independent long-term follow up clinic for oncology patients treated with radiation for prostate cancer by Dr DAmico more than 2 years ago.
Reviewing radiologic studies to determine follow up for patients who require additional treatment and arranging appropriate triage.
Independently manage the urgent patient needs that occur during treatment and in the weeks to months immediately after treatment when toxicities are expected to peak.
Coordinate new patient education and assisting with new patient consults.
Manage diagnostic imaging and laboratory test and medication ordering as well as appropriate referrals to other providers and services.
Evaluate and care for patients who are undergoing treatment concerning the acute and late effects (> 6 months) from radiation therapy and review patient cases with supervising physician as appropriate.
Prescribing pre- and post-treatment medications following physician consultation or direction and subsequently instructing patients and families regarding medication usage and potential side effects.
With assistance from Dr DAmico develop a strong foundation in evaluating evidence-based care publications and applying this knowledge to inform patients of their treatment options.
Recognizing situations that require the immediate attention of a physician and executing appropriately.
Job Summary

The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients medical and/or surgical including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. Essential Functions
Provides direct care counseling and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory inpatient operative and/or procedural setting.
-Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
-Orders interprets and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
-Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic laboratory and physical examination findings.
-Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
-Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes procedure notes operative notes and discharge summaries.
-Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
Qualifications
Education/Licensure:
Completion of Masters DNP or PhD Degree in Nursing required. Completion of a Masters or post Masters degree in adult or family NP program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) required.
Current Adult/Geriatric or Family Nurse Practitioner Certification by an accredited APRN certifying body required.
Valid prescriptive authority from both MA DPH and Federal DEA required.
Current APRN license to practice in Massachusetts required.
Experience:
1. Minimum 5 years of current nurse practitioner experience caring for a urology focused patient population required.
2. Demonstrated experience managing complex urologic conditions in an ambulatory setting required.
3. Clinical nurse practitioner experience in radiation oncology preferred.
Other:
ANA or other appropriate nursing certification in the area of practice and authorization by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in an expanded role. DEA for prescription writing.
SKILL/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Expert Clinical judgement skills to function in the independent role.
Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills in order to collaborate with patients families staff and community health workers.
Ability to work with frequent stress resulting from busy clinical settings and changing organizational climate.
Ability to self-directive and demonstrate initiative in addressing responsibilities of position.
Ability to utilize appropriate problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
CLINICAL STANDARDS THAT SERVE AS GUIDELINES FOR THIS PRACTICE Nurse practitioner practice conforms to generally accepted standards of care as promulgated by the American Nurses Association and other relevant professional organizations. Patient care management is based on current evidence and sound clinical judgment. Clinical references may include but are limited to: Harrisons Principles of Internal Medicine; Physicians Desk Reference; Barker Principles of Ambulatory Medicine
